We have all known that strapping a birthing mother to the continuous monitor and making her stay in bed for labor does not improve safety outcomes, but instead increases cesarean rates.

Thank you to the New York Times for putting it on blast!

That’s why we homebirth midwives have continued to use intermittent fetal monitoring with a hand held Doppler for labor and birth.

Intermittent fetal monitoring with the hand held Doppler is safe and does not increase cesarean rates. It is approved by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology for low risk mothers and babies.

Furthermore birthing people prefer intermittent monitoring because they are not tethered to the continuous monitor and can move about freely during labor.
