Isolation movements when it comes to exercise aren’t in reference to isolating yourself and being alone when you’re work out 😂

Isolation movements refer to a single primary muscle being used in conjunction with a single joint for a particular exercise. In the attached video you see me doing what are known as “spider curls.” Only the biceps muscles are working and only the elbows are bending.

Isolation movements are particularly loved by those who are into working out their “vanity” muscles or the “mirror” muscles. There are some cases where isolation movements are beneficial like during rehab. However, the vast majority of us should stick more to compound movements; movements involving the use of multiple muscles and multiple joints.

This is neuromotor work as demonstrated by my brother-in-law, Dean. Neuromotor work is the third of four areas where adults should regularly practice some form of exercise on a weekly basis.

What the heck is neuromotor work? It‘s your ability to maintain your balance, to be aware of where you are in space, your ability to coordinate the limbs of your body with your eyes, your ability to move with agility in certain situations - in essence, neuromotor work is having a sharp mind that’s in tune with your body.

Why is this important? Falls are a leading cause of death for people over the age of 65. Now you may not be anywhere near the age of 65, however it’s still important for you to maintain your abilities. Just like with cardio and resistance training, neuromotor abilities are a use it or lose it proposition; the less you use it, the less you have of it. In situations where you may find yourself tripping over something, neuromotor practice could mean the difference between saving yourself from falling or a twisted ankle or worse.

So how do you practice neuromotor work? It’s as easy as balancing on one foot, walking on a curb, walking on uneven footing such as gravel or hiking trails, or taking a yoga class. There are many ways to practice neuromotor work - just be sure to find one that you like and practice it on a regular basis.

Resistance training. After almost 11 years in the biz, it’s still very misunderstood. Men want to work out purely for the aesthetics. Women are concerned that they’ll grow muscles like men. One view may be rooted from a self image place, the other may be rooted in misinformation/lack of information.

This is why it’s important to uncover and/or discover your “why” FIRST and then develop goals focused on this reasoning for wanting to become more fit and healthy.

Resistance training purely for the aesthetic is fine if what you’re trying to pursue is a goal in physique competition, modeling, bodybuilding, and/or something related. For most of us this isn’t realistic.

The concern that women will become large and bulky similar to men if they work out with weights or in the gym is also not based in reality. Women do not possess the hormones in sufficient quantities to encourage muscle growth similar to men.

Resistance training for the every day person is meant to either maintain or increase strength in the muscles of the body (dependent on goals) so that one is able to complete the activities of their daily lives with minimal effort or exertion.

If you discover during your search for your why and during your goal setting that you’re unable to lift beyond a certain amount of groceries, that you’re not able to move a piece of furniture you feel you should be able to move, and/or feel like the baby you’re holding in your arms is much heavier than it really is, you have multiple good reasons to participate in regular resistance training.

GOALS! Without them it’s like flying blind from here to the east coast. Or trying to cook a fancy dinner in the kitchen without recipes. Or driving to Pahrump without a map. Or yup, you guessed it, trying to get going with your fitness journey without knowing what exactly you’re trying to accomplish!

The beauty is, it’s not very difficult to get started. In fact, everyone has heard of SMART goals. You can use SMART goals for fitness just as much as you can use them for anything else.

The great thing about SMART goals is that they help keep you focused and they don’t require a tremendous amount of time to put together. And they can be as simple or as elaborate as you want them to be. It’s completely up to you.

If you have SMART goals set up, the odds of you being distracted by other people, videos, influencers, the news, social media, your friends, your family, and basically the rest of the world, drops tremendously!

And then once again, you can say to yourself: S**t!
