Many Lung Cancer Deaths Could Be Prevented with Improved Screening.

Despite evidence that low-dose chest CT scans can detect lung cancer early in at-risk adults—such as those with a history of smoking or occupational exposure to certain pollutants—and reduce lung cancer mortality nearly threefold, new research suggests that only 19% of eligible adults undergo screening.

Nearly Three-Quarters of Adults Struggle with Daytime Sleepiness!

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that 72% of adults in the United States experience daytime sleepiness, which can negatively affect mood, stress levels, productivity, and relationships. The Academy notes that chronic daytime tiredness may signal insufficient sleep or poor sleep quality due to an underlying health issue, such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Therapeutic Climbing Shows Mood and Focus Benefits.

For psychiatric patients under treatment for depression, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, a recent study found that structured therapeutic climbing sessions provided benefits with respect to mood, mental focus, social connection, and physical confidence. Participants found the intervention enjoyable and were likely to continue climbing after the study.

Factors Linked to Central Sensitization.

Central sensitization is a state in which the nervous system becomes overly reactive, amplifying pain signals and lowering the threshold at which pain is perceived—an effect that can hinder recovery from chronic low back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders. A recent study found that central sensitization was not directly associated with psychological distress or pain intensity, but it showed mild associations with higher body mass index and low vitamin D status. These findings suggest that poor metabolic health may contribute to central sensitization and should be considered when patients fail to respond to conservative treatment approaches, such as chiropractic care.

Dementia Increasing Worldwide.

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease study, researchers report that the global age-standardized rate of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias increased from 1990 to 2021. Because burden growth was highest in richer nations, the authors suggest that declines in metabolic health may be a contributing factor to the increased incidence of dementia, highlighting the importance of maintaining good metabolic health through regular exercise, a high-quality diet, healthy body weight, adequate sleep, and effective management of stress and inflammation.

Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Prediabetes in Young Adults.

Ultra-processed foods are food products that contain added sugars, fats, and salt to enhance flavor and prolong shelf life. Researchers at the University of Southern California report that for every 10% increase in ultra-processed food intake, a young adult’s risk of prediabetes rises by 65%. This finding is especially concerning given that ultra-processed foods now account for more than half of the typical adult’s daily calorie intake.

Infrared Sauna May Help Athletes Recover Faster.

In a recent experiment, researchers found that athletes who use an infrared sauna after training sessions experienced less muscle soreness, better jump performance, and improved sprint speed when compared with teammates who refrained from sauna use.

Global Tuberculosis Cases Hit Record High.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs and, if untreated, can be fatal or cause serious long-term disability by damaging the lungs and other organs. The World Health Organization reports that a record 8.3 million cases of TB were diagnosed worldwide in 2024. In the United States, TB diagnoses also reached their highest level in more than twelve years, mostly among individuals born outside the country who acquired a latent infection earlier in life that has since become symptomatic.

A recent literature review found that line dancing provides a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and flexibility; boosts mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; promotes social connection even without a partner; challenges the brain to improve memory and cognitive function; and encourages community engagement and a sense of belonging.

Lifestyle Factors Linked to Low Back Pain.

While we normally think of poor posture or improper lifting technique as risk factors for low back pain, lifestyle choices can also set the stage for the condition. In a recent study, researchers found that smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index, and dyslipidemia are significantly associated with low back pain, while smoking and physical inactivity are linked to more severe pain and a greater likelihood of progressing to chronic low back pain.

Sleep Troubles Linked to Cognitive Decline.

The Mayo Clinic reports that middle-aged and older adults with chronic insomnia—especially when combined with short sleep duration—experienced faster memory decline and a 40% higher risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia in the following five years than participants without sleep troubles.
