Is Internet Addiction Linked to Psychological Distress?

Assessments completed by 7,278 university students revealed that 38.6% exhibited signs of Internet addiction, which was associated with higher levels of psychological distress, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. These findings suggest that strategies aimed at reducing time spent online could benefit college students, particularly those under treatment for psychological disorders.

A systematic review and meta-analysis that included 63 studies found that for every 28-gram increase in weekly nut intake, an individual’s risk of coronary heart disease and stroke falls by 4% and 1%, respectively.

Regular Bedtime Can Improve Blood Pressure.

Oregon Health & Science University researchers report that middle-aged adults with hypertension who shifted from irregular bedtimes to a consistent bedtime for just two weeks experienced similar drops in blood pressure—about 4 mmHg systolic and 3 mmHg diastolic—as would be expected by increased exercise or reduced sodium intake.

Gestational Diabetes Rate Up 36% from 2016.

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy and can have long-term effects on a woman’s cardiovascular and metabolic health. From 2016 to 2024, its incidence increased each year, rising from 58 to 79 cases per 1,000 births. Researchers suggest this upward trend may reflect worsening cardiometabolic health among young adults, including poorer dietary patterns, lower physical activity levels, and rising obesity rates.

Among a group of 295 college aged young adults, researchers found that reducing social media use from two hours a day to less than 30 minutes reduced anxiety by 16%, depression by 25%, and insomnia by 15%.

Early Life Farm Exposure May Reduce Allergy Risk.

A study of infants from Old Order Mennonite farming families found that children raised in agricultural environments had higher levels of IgG and IgA antibodies, more advanced B-cell development, and a lower risk of food allergies than peers raised in urban settings. The findings suggest that greater microbial exposure early in life may positively influence immune development and reduce allergy risk.

Alcohol Linked to Increased Cancer Risk.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 62 studies found that alcohol consumption can damage DNA, disrupt hormonal balance, increase oxidative stress, and suppress immune function over time—mechanisms that elevate the risk of breast, colorectal, liver, oral, esophageal, and gastric cancers. While higher drinking frequency and quantity are linked to greater risk, the researchers also note that even moderate alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of cancer.
