Road Traffic Noise May Affect Vascular Function.

Researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz observed that overnight exposure to urban road traffic noise can increase stress and inflammation markers in otherwise healthy adults, leading to sleep disruption, impaired blood vessel function, and a higher resting heart rate. The findings suggest that living in areas with higher levels of nighttime traffic noise may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Researchers from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences report that adding just five minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day and reducing sedentary time by 30 minutes could prevent a meaningful proportion of early deaths at the population level—potentially up to about 10% and 7%, respectively.

For patients with sacroiliac joint dysfunction, a recent systematic review and meta-analysis found that muscle energy technique, mobilization, and therapeutic exercise were associated with reductions in pain and improvements in disability. Doctors of chiropractic routinely employ these and other conservative therapies in the management of sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Moderate Social Media Use Linked to Better Teen Well-Being.

Assessments completed by more than 100,000 Australian youths found that excessive social media use (more than two hours a day) and total avoidance of social media are both associated with poorer wellbeing. Meanwhile, teens with moderate use (less than two hours a day), reported higher scores with respect to happiness, life satisfaction, and emotional regulation.

Microplastics Detected in Prostate Tumor Tissue.

Examinations of prostate cancer tumors from ten patients revealed microplastic particles in all but one sample, with cancerous tissue containing approximately 2.5 times more plastic than adjacent benign tissue. The findings suggest that microplastic exposure may be a potential risk factor for prostate cancer through inflammation-related mechanisms, though further research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.

Muscle Strength Matters for Senior Women Longevity.

University at Buffalo researcher report that among women aged 63 and older, higher muscle strength—as determined by grip strength and chair-stand performance—is linked to a lower risk of death in the following eight years after adjusting for aerobic activity, inflammation, and cardiovascular fitness. More specifically, each 7-kg (~15.42 lbs.) increase in grip strength was associated with a 12% lower death risk, while faster chair-stand times predicted a 4% reduction.

Many Expectant Mothers Have Low Back Pain.

An analysis of data collected from 474 women during pregnancy revealed two-thirds experienced pregnancy-related low back pain with a third noting moderate-to-severe pain and disability. Further analysis revealed risk factors for pregnancy-related low back pain include excess gestational weight gain, a history of back pain, and repetitive or prolonged static work postures.

According to a study that monitored more than 65,000 adults for four years, swapping out 60 minutes of daily TV viewing with physical activity of any intensity can reduce the risk of major depression by up to 19%.
