Mama's Kitchen OUR MISSION: Mama’s Kitchen believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life We have over 1,000 awesome volunteers who make this happen.

Mama's Kitchen cooks, packages, and delivers food at no cost to folks in San Diego County who are too ill to shop and cook. We also run a food pantry on-site at our facility on Home Avenue in San Diego. Please visit our website at www.mamaskitchen.org

Mama's Kitchen holds several fundraisers throughout the year:
-Mama's Day, held the Friday before Mother's Day each year, is a restaurant tasting

with over 55 participating restaurants who prepare signature dishes for our guests.
- Mama's Pies, our Thanksgiving fundraiser. Starting in October, our supporters sell Thanksgiving pies to their family, friends and co-workers, who then pick up their pies throughout San Diego County on the day before Thanksgiving.
-Tree of Life, commemorating World AIDS Day, is held every year on December 1st at Village Hillcrest, with a candlelight vigil and tree lighting ceremony.

🚗 This volunteer group truly delivered! 🚗

Last week, we were honored to welcome volunteers from the US Grant + Marriott International team. They delivered to 44 critically ill San Diegans across three routes totaling over 350 meals!

Thank you to everyone who dedicated time out of their Friday to ensure our neighbors received the healing nutrition they need. We hope to see you again soon! 🫶

For many years, Mama’s Kitchen has recognized March 31st as a day to honor the farm worker movement. While the holiday was originally named for one individual, its true meaning has always been broader, recognizing all those who have sacrificed and worked tirelessly to advance the rights, safety, and dignity of farm workers.

At Mama’s Kitchen, every meal we prepare is made possible by farm workers who grow, harvest, and process the fresh ingredients we rely on. From there, our mission continues, transforming that food into medically tailored meals that support the health, stability, and well-being of our community members facing serious illness.

Today, we are proud to observe Farmworkers Day. We stand in gratitude for those who sustain our food system, and we stand firmly against exploitation and violence in all forms.

Did you know that over the past year, for the first time, we partnered with the local nonprofit Resounding Joy to offer music therapy sessions for our senior clients?

With funding from the Prebys Foundation, Resounding Joy brought music, connection, and joy to our senior clients across San Diego County through free 8-week music sessions led by trained music therapists and musicians.

We are excited to begin our second year of partnership with them!

Last week, we were visited by the Jack in the Box team! 🫶

They helped us prepare over 750 freshly made chicken taco meals for our critically ill clients. Even more impressive, this is part of their continued effort to volunteer at Mama's Kitchen every six weeks!

Yesterday, we welcomed the USA Women's 7s Rugby team to volunteer! 🎉

These players brought a great attitude and worked efficiently to plate over 700 plates of vegetarian tofu broccoli stir-fry and prep over 200 lbs. of our Butternut Squash Tirshi. Their hard work will allow us to deliver these meals to our critically ill clients on Friday.

Every year, the San Diego community continues to astound us with its ability to come together to support those who need it most.

This is the season where many celebrate and support their family and friends. We are so grateful that our supporters have opened their hearts for our San Diego Neighbors with critical illnesses.

Our Story

Mama’s Kitchen, a community-driven organization, believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life — nutritious food. Our nutrition services improve the lives of women, men, and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer, or other critical illnesses.

- Our Home Delivered Meal Program provides three medically-tailored meals a day, 7 days a week, to our critically ill neighbors and their children.

- Our food pantry offers a monthly grocery shopping opportunity to low-income, HIV-positive residents, with fresh produce, lean proteins and nutrient-dense food choices.

- Our medical nutrition program provides intensive nutrition education and counseling from our registered dietitian, so that clients learn to self-manage their dietary needs.
