Cutting calories in midlife? I know you think you know about protein. You are not eating enough.

And it is a problem

In a 30% calorie deficit, you need THREE TIMES the amino acids per serving to not lose muscle. Three times. Same diet, same protein you have always eaten, and you are quietly losing muscle every day
It gets worse with age.

Our bodies stop responding to the amino acids in protein the way they used to. So even if you are crushing your protein goal, your body cannot use it the same way it did at 30

This conversation with Angelo Keely on Midlife Conversations changed how I think about protein, aminos, and muscle preservation completely

In this midlife conversation we also share simple solutions

If you are on or considering a statin, listen to what this heart surgeon just said

He is a cardiologist. He was told 25 years ago that heart disease would be solved by now because of statins. It was not. He is now busier than ever… make that make sense.

And what he is seeing in his patients is making him question everything we were taught about cholesterol and heart disease

The kind of conversation we should ALL be having before we accept a prescription that might be doing the opposite of what we think

Comment “LAB LIST” and I will send you my must checklist

your doctor says your labs are normal. And you’re sitting there thinking, then why do I feel like this?

Normal and optimal are not the same thing

Lab reference ranges are based on population averages. Not on what a thriving midlife womans should look like.

For example, your thyroid could be in the normal range and still be completely under performing for you.

Your hormones can be technically normal for your age, and still robbing you of energy sleep muscle and more

Your cortisol can be “fine “and still driving everything else that’s feeling off

Being your own health detective means knowing the difference. Knowing what to push

Be in collaboration with your doctor. You are paying them. A great doctor is open to your questions and suggestions. Dictators talk over you and at you and tell you you’re wrong for asking questions.

I put together a short list of must check labs that every midlife women should request and look for optimal ranges

Comment BLOAT and I will send you these

It is not what you eat. It is what you actually DIGEST

After 35 your enzyme production drops. By 65 it has dropped 50%

So you can be eating clean, eating high protein, doing everything right, and your body still cannot fully break it down. The protein you are eating is not getting to your muscle. The food sits and ferments. THAT is the bloat. THAT is the puffy uncomfortable feeling

Brooks and I take digestive enzymes with every meal. If you can do just ONE thing for your digestion in midlife, this is it

I have used MassZymes by BiOptimizers for years. Full spectrum. Breaks down proteins, fats, starches, fibers. Especially helpful when you are eating more protein (which most of us in midlife should be)

Comment NOTES for more midlife fixes nobody is talking about… like,
the itch you cannot scratch. If you know, you know

That deep “inside the head” ear itch is one of the most maddening symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Hardly anyone talks about it. Even HRT does not always touch it

It happens because dropping estrogen thins the skin in your ear canal. It gets dry and inflamed (asteatotic otitis). Q-tips make it worse. Antihistamines do nothing

Here is what actually works:

THE RECIPE
1 part steroid nasal spray
1 part mineral oil

THE HOW-TO
Spray nasal spray UPRIGHT into a small container (about 40 pumps)
Mix with equal parts mineral oil in a dropper bottle

Shake well before each use
Warm the bottle in your hands (cold drops will make you dizzy)

Use 2 to 3 drops as needed

IMPORTANT: Do NOT use this if you have a ruptured eardrum, ear tubes, or active drainage. Always check with your doctor first

We were lied to about phytoestrogens. And whether you take HRT or not, you need to hear this

For decades we were told soy is dangerous. That phytoestrogens cause cancer. That midlife women should stay far away

What the actual research says is the opposite

A PhD just laid this out on my podcast. Decades of studies show women who consume more phytoestrogens have less cardiovascular disease, less diabetes, less dementia, and LESS risk of cancer. Not more. Less

So where did the fear come from? Mouse studies that used massive doses humans would never eat. And the 2002 HRT scare that made anything connected to estrogen terrifying overnight. Soy got caught in the crossfire and we have been avoiding it for nothing

If you cannot take HRT or choose not to, this conversation is critical. If you ARE on HRT, this conversation is still critical because phytoestrogens work alongside what you are doing, not against it

We go all the way deep in the full episode

⚠️READ THIS ⚠️ if you have not been working out and don’t know where to start (and actually don’t even have the motivation to want to yet)…

You don’t have to force yourself to “just make yourself workout”

Dang it can feel so hard and challenging when you are not feeling amazing. You know you should want to but it feels overwhelming. Here is a different idea… Jump start yourself into a win first

First… Spend time thinking / journaling about what it would feel like to be a stronger, leaner, healthier version of yourself.

Next… Start walking and moving your body. Start standing a lot more than sitting … seems simple but it makes a difference.

Hydrate more. And then even more

Focus on adding in more of the good foods that fuel and heal you and that will make less room for the “not so amazing foods” that are not helping you thrive .

Release those first 5 lbs, get rid of the bloat and excess water and then… when you are feeling a win, add in the workouts. From a place of possibility and potential vs a place of feeling defeated.

Comment PODCAST 👇Five things health influencers say that are flat out wrong for midlife women.

Balance, your hormones naturally. You can’t balance hormones that are gone. In menopause your estrogen and progesterone have left the building. They are gone. There’s nothing to balance. You’ve gotta replace them or support what is left.

Just breathe, meditate, do yoga. I love those. But if you’re nervous system is in overdrive because of real inflammation, no amount of breathing fixes. You have to interrupt the driver first. Remove the inflammation problem. Support it with the right supplements. Then the calming work lands. You can’t meditate your way out of a physiological problem.

Eat Cleaner. Clean eating does not override cortisol disregulation, insulin resistance, toxic overload or estrogen loss. Plenty of us eat perfectly and gain weight and feel like crap

Work out, Harder. You more HIIT. This can be disastrous with low hormones and already inflamed.

Go on a calorie restriction. This can be really dangerous for women. Severe restriction slows metabolism, raises, cortisol, and fuels muscle loss.

We are different. Things that works for our 20s 30s even early 40s is not the same.

Comment PODCAST 👇We are not our mothers “hush hush and accept it” menopause. If you are feeling crappy you do not have to.

And it’s not just “workout more and eat less” advice. We need more than that simplified advice after 50…

Here are some of the things we can do… (I’m doing them all!)

HRT….find a doctor actually up to speed and educated on this.

Toxic load, Gut health and oral biome clean up! Do NOT ignore this. Take this part seriously

Your thyroid. Check it. With a doctor who actually understands thyroid and doesn’t just test TSH

Nervous system. Get out of fight or flight. Stress will destroy us.

Get outside a lot more. We need real sunlight. We need to be in nature. The artificial blue light and electronic / EMF overload is slowly destroying our mood and energy and health

Walk and stand a lot more than you are sitting.

Lift heavy things. More muscle helps our bones, and our confidence.

Explanted my breast implants. Not saying we all need to BUT… many of us got those things in the 90s! I defended them for 33 years but explanting was one of my best decision! Inflammation melted off. I am now removing old root canals. First one is out, second coming out next.

Get curious. Really curious. We have to be our own “health detectives” in midlife. We can’t rely on 5 minute doctor appointments to fully understand US. We have to learn ourselves and learn the questions to ask

At 54 now, after a gazillion surgeries and setbacks, my new PR is regulating my nervous system…

That type A “crush they day” girl that got me through the first many years is not the girl I’m bringing into the next chapter

My personality changed after that final surgery almost a year ago.

L5s1 disc replacement was literally the center of my WHOLE body and energetically something changed and I’m grateful for that.

In my darkest moments during recovery I became very aware that it’s been my nervous system that needs a transformation… more on that later

I think my crazy hustle mode got left in the operating room. And I’m perfectly fine with that.

Anyways, I’ve never been one for a “perfect morning routine” but as of late it’s been this 💗
