Project New Village - San Diego

Project New Village - San Diego Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

First week of 2026 People’s Produce MFM schedule and truck menu! We’re back fully stocked with local and hyper-local produce, so come out and support local farmers, our local economy, and our environment by treating yourself to the fresh, healthy produce that supports our community! Hyper-local highlights on the truck this week include lettuce, basil spinach, and beets from Cumberland Estates and sapote from Thelma’s Terrace.

Speaking of hyper-local - a good number of food growers from our Neighborhood Growers Network now contribute to our mobile farmers market on a regular basis. Their work is instrumental in our Good Food District initiative of building food sovereignty in greater Southeastern San Diego. If you are interested in joining this network of do-gooders, or if you have an interest in gardening and growing food, please join us every second Saturday of the month for our monthly Growers Collective meetup at Mt. Hope Community Garden. This month’s meetup is taking place this Saturday, 1/10 from 9am to 10:30am and is open to anyone in the community interested in growing food.

Today is Day 5 of Kwanzaa, Nia - Purpose. Ms.Moss speaks about her connection to this principle in our recent podcast episode of PROJECT: Good Food about Kwanzaa.
This principle is essentially a commitment to the collective vocation of building, developing and defending our community, its culture and history in order to regain our historical initiative and greatness as a people and add to the good and beauty in the world.
We’re fortunate to have food justice partners who share the same commitment to our community by uplifting the good, protecting the cultural heritage, and creating an equitable food landscape based on the needs and guidance of our community members.

12/29/2025

Our new PROJECT: Good Food podcast episode is now available - Generational Ties, Kwanzaa Traditions in San Diego.

Kwanzaa is an annual year-end celebration of African-American history, values, family, community and culture. As 2025 comes to a close, we thought it only fitting to focus our last podcast of the year on Kwanzaa in San Diego. In this episode we host an intergenerational group of community members who share a deep, personal connection to Kwanzaa. Through their lived experiences, we’ll explore their feelings and thoughts on the significance and symbolism of this cultural celebration.

Hosts Brandon S. Johnson and Nyenyekevu Diane Moss are joined by Rodney West, Jonathon Scott, Dr. LaWana Richmond, and Mwenda KudumuBiggs.

Today is Day 4 of Kwanzaa, Ujamaa - cooperative economics. We’re working to build a more just and equitable local economy through urban agriculture, so this principle is very important to our mission.
By supporting hyper-local food growers, providing mobile farmers markets to neighborhoods in need, and giving local residents an opportunity to earn $10 of produce by taking a survey at every market, we’re working hard to ensure everything we do is by, with, and for our community.
Happy Kwanzaa!

Today, Dec. 28th we celebrate the third day of Kwanzaa, Ujima - collective work and responsibility. We must work together to make our families and communities strong. We are responsible for ourselves and we are responsible to our communities, so let’s work to uplift one another and create the change we want to see in our communities.

12/27/2025

As we celebrate the second day of Kwanzaa, Dec.27th signifies Kujichagulia - self-determination. Kujichagulia means knowing who we are and our role in our community as we journey through life. We must define our interest, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves, making decisions that benefit the family and community. We look back at this journey, realizing that every step - however small - has led us to where we are now, and that nothing worth having comes easy. We look forward to continuing the hard work into 2026, and are grateful for the support and dedication of those who join us on this journey.
