Project New Village - San Diego

Project New Village - San Diego Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

As we celebrate the second day of Kwanzaa, Dec.27th signifies Kujichagulia - self-determination. Kujichagulia means knowing who we are and our role in our community as we journey through life. We must define our interest, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves, making decisions that benefit the family and community. We look back at this journey, realizing that every step - however small - has led us to where we are now, and that nothing worth having comes easy. We look forward to continuing the hard work into 2026, and are grateful for the support and dedication of those who join us on this journey.

Today signifies the first day of Kwanzaa, a celebration of family, community, and culture. On Dec.26, the first candle of the Kinara is lit to signify the first principal, Umoja, or Unity. We hope this day finds you surrounded by family and loved ones, and experiencing a sense of unity and connection. We’re very fortunate to be surrounded by a community of good people who strive to improve and strengthen our connections with each other, and on this day it’s good to reflect on and celebrate these relationships.

Some images from last Friday’s Fannie Lou Hamer Celebration. Thanks to all who made this event special! Because of you, we find ourselves one step closer to reaching our year-end giving goal - $25,000 by the end of 2025!
We’re currently 70% of the way there - help us reach the finish line as we close out the year! By supporting our Creating Our Good Food District campaign, you’re helping us continue our work of using urban agriculture to combat food insecurity and build power in historically overlooked neighborhoods of SESD.

Back to a full People’s Produce MFM schedule this week - we hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving break and enjoyed time with friends and family. Speaking of family, we’d like to highlight some of our hyper-local food grower family members who have their produce on the truck this week: Amy Acres with persimmons, Thelma’s Terrace with rosemary, and Cumberland Estates with leaf lettuce.

Also speaking of family, let’s hear it for our father-son team, Mr. Rodney West and Mr. Jonathon Scott, who work tirelessly every week to bring fresh local produce to the neighborhoods of greater Southeastern SD. These men are instrumental in our work of creating a Good Food District, and if you agree please consider making a donation to our year-end fundraising campaign that supports the important work they do. To give, visit https://bit.ly/GFD-giving (link in bio), and thank you for your support!
