Challenge: Verenice was referred to PASD by San Ysidro Health after the GYN that was going to do her surgery was no longer able to do it. She had already gone through the process with Comunidad de Apoyo, a non-profit founded by a local family physician and community members, to get surgery but now she needed to start over with a new doctor and she didn’t have insurance or the funds to cover the surgery with someone else.

Services Provided: PASD helped set her up with a new GYN but given her medical history it was recommended she go with GYN/ONC because they were more experienced in handling cases like hers. Verenice was a bit frustrated but understood that this decision was for a better outcome for her and that though it made the process longer it would be worth it in the end. We got her set up with GYN/ONC and she had surgery which went well but the doctor said her preliminary pathology indicated cancer and further testing was needed to confirm. We talked through the options with the patient and prepared for the worst. Fortunately, at her last post-op the doctor was able to confirm there was no cancer and she was discharged from care.

Outcome: Verenice is now fully healed from her surgery. She is very happy and relieved to be able to go back to her normal life.

“Parkinson's is getting worse in my body. But I feel very fortunate that I have a job and can work. I have a family that loves me! I have the help of the program (you all)! I have the medications I need! And most importantly, I have the strength that God gives me to overcome adversity! So my answer to your question would be:I have felt blessed!!! Thank you very much for caring about my health”

The care for our patient looks different depending on their diagnosis. For Bruno, his care is a work in progress, and alongside Dr. James Grisolia, our neurologist, we are doing our best to ensure that he receives the correct care he needs for his Parkinson's.

Because access to care changes lives.
