The National Alliance on Mental Illness in San Diego (NAMI San Diego) is the community’s voice on mental illness. We are a part of grass-roots, nonprofit, national NAMI organization, and also an affiliate of NAMI California. NAMI San Diego was founded in 1978 by family members of people with mental illness. We have a threefold mission:
‣ Support people with mental illnesses and their families by helping them find coping mechanisms for their daily struggle with brain disorders.
‣ Educate people who have mental illness, their families, and the general public about mental illness with the goal of dispelling ignorance and stigma.
‣ Advocate for more research and an improved system of mental health services across the nation. At the heart of NAMI San Diego’s mission is the sharing of information and striving to end the stigma associated with mental illness. To this end, we offer a Helpline, support groups, educational meetings, newsletters, a lending library and a number of classes on mental illness held at various locations throughout San Diego County.

Every NAMIWalks participant has a story. This week, we’re highlighting Fred.💚

“I walk in memory of my daughter Nicole who passed away in 2019 after years of suffering from mental illness and substance abuse. Her passing left a big void in my life and I made the decision to support NAMI and the walk as a way to deal with her loss and do something positive to create awareness and raise money to support the great programs that NAMI provides. The annual walk also gives me a chance to keep her memory alive with my family and friends. I have been walking now since 2020 and every year has been a great experience to not only raise money but connect with other people who have similar stories.”
