Institutionalized racism is a public health crisis. In addition to Black communities (and other communities of color) across the country being disproportionately affected by police brutality and COVID-19, Black women also die in childbirth four times as often as white women and Black infants are less likely than white infants to see their first birthdays. These are not pre-ordained fates... they are the results of systemic inequities. Having access to quality, community-based care is CRITICAL to empowering the birth experience for Black women and driving positive outcomes - that is, PROTECTING THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WHO MATTER. In the US, newborns visit their pediatrician a few weeks after discharge from the hospital, but many moms are expected to wait 6 weeks or longer to be seen themselves. A woman's physical and mental health matters, even after she becomes a mom! We should all demand better care. And in the meantime, learn more about postpartum mood disorders and the resources available to support new mamas near you. Postpartum psychosis is rare, but very real, doctors say. And, unlike in some European nations, most U.S. moms who need inpatient psychiatric care can't bring along their babies, adding to the trauma.
