Institutionalized racism is a public health crisis. In addition to Black communities (and other communities of color) across the country being disproportionately affected by police brutality and COVID-19, Black women also die in childbirth four times as often as white women and Black infants are less likely than white infants to see their first birthdays. These are not pre-ordained fates... they are the results of systemic inequities. Having access to quality, community-based care is CRITICAL to empowering the birth experience for Black women and driving positive outcomes - that is, PROTECTING THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WHO MATTER. Nikki Helms, one of four Black midwives in San Diego, is working to open the San Diego Community Birth Center... let's support!
