The most effective cleaning while you’re in traditional braces is to remove your bands and wires before your cleaning.

When they’re removed, the cleaning is:
✅ more thorough
✅ more comfortable
✅ better at preventing cavities and white spots
✅ better for reducing gum inflammation and bleeding

⚠️ Bands and wires should ONLY be removed by your orthodontic office.

Fun fact: Your hygienist and dentist don’t look for the same things on x-rays!

Hygienists are trained to spot hidden calculus (tartar) lurking under the gumline, often only visible on x-rays. This buildup can lead to gum disease if left untreated.

Dentists are typically focused on detecting cavities, decay, and tooth structure issues.

💜 As hygienists, we’re looking at the bigger picture…supporting the gums, bone, and foundation of the tooth… because our goal is to help save the tooth as a whole, not just treat what you can see.

Reasons why teeth should be straightened, from a hygiene perspective 👇🏾

One of the biggest challenges I see with crowded teeth is plaque retention. Tight or overlapping areas make it difficult to brush and floss effectively, which can lead to inflammation, tartar buildup, and cavities.

Straight teeth simply allow better access for proper oral hygiene.

Why do hygienist recommend a cleaning every 6 months?

Because even with great brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can still build up in places your toothbrush can’t reach. Over time, that buildup can lead to cavities, gum inflammation, and bigger dental problems.

Professional cleanings help remove that hardened buildup and allow your dental team to catch small issues before they become major ones.

Some patients benefit from cleanings every 3–4 months to better manage their gum health. But at the very least, keeping your 6-month cleaning helps stabilize a healthy mouth.

🦷 Remember: something is always better than nothing when it comes to your oral health.

You can still get a cavity underneath a crown and here’s why :

1. The margin (where the crown meets the natural tooth) is the most common place for decay. Even a tiny gap:
-Allows bacteria to enter
-Traps plaque
-Exposes the underlying tooth to acid.

If plaque isn’t removed daily, acids from bacteria dissolve the remaining tooth structure …leading to recurrent decay (cavity on the same tooth again)

2. Crowns are glued on with dental cement. Over years:
-Cement can slowly dissolve
-Micro-gaps can form
-Saliva and bacteria seep underneath

Once bacteria get under the crown, decay can spread silently because you can’t see it.

3. The Tooth Underneath Is Already Compromised. Most crowned teeth:
-Had large fillings
-Had cracks
-Had prior decay

That means there may be less healthy enamel left.
Dentin (inner tooth layer) decays faster than enamel …so if bacteria reach it, you get the point.

4. 4. Gum Recession Exposes Root Surfaces:
-The crown margin becomes exposed
-The root surface (softer than enamel) becomes vulnerable
-Root decay can start at the edge of the crown

🦷 5. Poor Oral Hygiene or High Cavity Risk: Crowns don’t get cavities… the tooth underneath does.

Higher risk if someone has:
-Dry mouth
-High sugar intake
-Poor flossing around margins

If you made it this far, you care about your teeth ☺️

When you floss straight up and down, you’re only cleaning the contact point (that tight space where teeth touch).

But teeth are rounded, so plaque sits along the curved sides.
The C-shape allows the floss to hug the tooth surface and actually clean it.

You can floss every day and still get buildup if the floss isn’t hugging the tooth.

Straight down removes what’s in between. C-shape removes what’s stuck to the tooth.

Hope this helps!🌟
