Choosing a Home Care Agency cane be a daunting task. Here is a question key to help you navigate:

Are you state licensed?

Are all caregivers employees of your company and part of the State Caregiver Registry?

What are your liability insurance limits (should be $1m/$3m)?

Are all employees bonded?

Will you show me your insurance certificates?

Do you provide and require in-house training for all caregivers prior to their working for a family?

Do you offer health insurance and retirement benefits to caregivers?

Are caregivers required to have a valid driver's license and clean DMV record?

Will your caregivers provide transportation to appointments and for errands?

Do you have a "non-owned auto" insurance policy to cover caregivers providing transportation?

Are caregivers trained in dementia and Alzheimer’s care?

Are caregivers trained in lift and transfer techniques and how to use a gait belt?

Can your caregivers help with medication reminders?

Does your company offer private care management if needed?

How long have you been in business? (I suggest a minimum of five years)

Do you conduct background checks, drug screens, live scan and require skills testing and immunization records of your caregivers?

Does your agency conduct supervisory visits periodically at the home?

How do you ensure the accuracy of caregiver time cards and that I'm not being overcharged?

Do you require a deposit for services?

How am I billed/what are payment options?

How is overtime calculated? (it should be time and one half after 9 hours, double time after 12 hours and time and one half for a caregiver that works more than 40 hours in a week)
