Dr. John Foltz, would like to let all of Torrey Hills Pet Hospital clients know that he purchased the clinic from Dr. Hyun. He was a technician at several veterinary emergency hospitals for 11 years before attending UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and graduating in 1994. He completed an internship in emergency and critical care medicine at Veterinary Emergency Services in Fresno, CA, after which he practiced emergency and critical care medicine for 18 years in San Jose and San Diego. He enjoys hiking, bicycling and camping with his wife and daughters. Many of Dr. H’s clients have already visited, and we at Torrey Hills Pet Hospital would like to thank them for giving us such a warm welcome! We were very happy that Blanca agreed to stay on, and we have hired two additional staff members (Tony and Paula). We have been very busy reorganizing the hospital over the past months. We are expanding services to provide excellent advanced veterinary care for all of our furry friends. We now have digital dental radiography, which will allow us to completely evaluate the dental health of your pets, and to diagnose and treat hidden dental problems. We will be introducing new wellness plans after the New Year holiday, so that we can provide comprehensive preventative care to our patients with substantial savings. At Torrey Hills Pet Hospital, our entire staff is committed to being your friendly and caring neighborhood veterinary hospital. We are fully equipped to care for your furry loved ones

There has been an outbreak of canine influenza (dog flu) in Northern California this year. While there haven't been any reported cases in San Diego, many boarding and doggie day care facilities are requiring the influenza vaccine before dogs may enter their facilities. It is administered as a series of 2 vaccines, 2-4 weeks apart, then yearly afterward. Protection is provided 2 weeks after the second vaccine. Please plan ahead, and schedule these vaccines well in advance if you are planning on boarding your dog, or taking them to day care.

Canine Influenza - Questions, answers and interim guidelines. What is "dog flu"? How is it transmitted? Is it deadly? Is it widespread? Is there a vaccine?

Flea prevention: The Do's and Dont's!
If you're thinking about flea prevention for your dog or cat, and you aren't sure if it's something you want to commit to year round, consider what might happen if a few of these guys make it on to your furry friend! A female flea lays about 25 eggs per day with a 7-day life span, which means after a week 1 flea can multiply into 175! Not only do they set up camp on your pet, but they also like to jump off and create breeding grounds in your carpet and furniture. And if your pet chews on their skin due to the itchy feeling of these crawling, biting insects, it's very likely that they will ingest a few of these fleas. Some of these fleas undoubtedly carry tapeworm larvae. Upon ingestion, the larvae are transmitted to your dog where, they eventually inhabit your pet’s intestine, and grow into 5 to 6 inch worms. You may notice small rice-sized tape worm segments in your pet’s stool. Although these worms are not transmittable from pet to pet, fleas in the house make any animals living in your home susceptible to a flea infestation and a subsequent tapeworm infection. When considering the best, most cost effective choice for flea prevention we urge you to consider a veterinary dispensed and recommended treatment. Fleas have adapted and become resistant to almost all of the common over the counter flea products over time. We carry a number of flea preventatives, including Simparica, Trifexis, Cheristin, Revolution and Vectra 3D . If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call at (858) 755-8275. We can help you decide which product might be best for you and your pet!

Fun facts:
The average cost of exterminating a flea infestation from your home:
- Flea treatments for all pets residing in your home estimated at - $45
- Flea treatment for the carpet and furniture of an average home - $30
- Estimated cost of pet bedding that must be discarded - $50
- Estimated cost of tapeworm treatment - $50
- Time spent vacuuming the carpet and furniture in your entire home every 10 days for a month – $Priceless

The average cost of a monthly flea preventative ($10-20, depending on product choice)
