Flea prevention: The Do's and Dont's!
If you're thinking about flea prevention for your dog or cat, and you aren't sure if it's something you want to commit to year round, consider what might happen if a few of these guys make it on to your furry friend! A female flea lays about 25 eggs per day with a 7-day life span, which means after a week 1 flea can multiply into 175! Not only do they set up camp on your pet, but they also like to jump off and create breeding grounds in your carpet and furniture. And if your pet chews on their skin due to the itchy feeling of these crawling, biting insects, it's very likely that they will ingest a few of these fleas. Some of these fleas undoubtedly carry tapeworm larvae. Upon ingestion, the larvae are transmitted to your dog where, they eventually inhabit your petβs intestine, and grow into 5 to 6 inch worms. You may notice small rice-sized tape worm segments in your petβs stool. Although these worms are not transmittable from pet to pet, fleas in the house make any animals living in your home susceptible to a flea infestation and a subsequent tapeworm infection. When considering the best, most cost effective choice for flea prevention we urge you to consider a veterinary dispensed and recommended treatment. Fleas have adapted and become resistant to almost all of the common over the counter flea products over time. We carry a number of flea preventatives, including Simparica, Trifexis, Cheristin, Revolution and Vectra 3D . If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call at (858) 755-8275.
