Rehab United

In the summer of 1991, their final summer in high school together before Sean went off to college, “The Brothers Hill” had planned 3 months of friends, sports, travel and fun. On June 8th, their plans came to a halt when Sean received a scary phone call from a family friend that Bryan had been hurt badly during an indoor soccer game and to await another phone call with more details. After what seemed like hours of waiting, Sean finally received a call from their mother stating that Bryan had badly broken his femur and doctors were testing to determine the extent of the injury. It was soon determined that nerves and a major artery were barely missed, but Bryan would require extensive surgery and physical therapy in the hospital for a minimum of one week before he would even be allowed to go home. Sean dropped everything and spent the week in the hospital with Bryan to help him rehabilitate alongside Bryan’s physical therapist. Sean thrived on finding ways to encourage Bryan and guide him just to walk again. The best part was that it didn’t feel like work for Sean –it was fun! Bryan recognized and felt the same amazing experience from the patient’s perspective. Throughout the week they solidified themselves as a life-long team who would encourage each other unconditionally. They talked about how fun it would be in the future to provide the same care and encouragement to others as that “team”. During that week together in the hospital, Sean and Bryan realized they had found their calling – they were determined not only to become Physical Therapists, but to someday open their own practice together and provide a quality of care for their clients never encountered before. Sean and Bryan wanted to provide not just treatment services, but a global treatment philosophy founded on encouragement, empathy, passion, and giving the very best of themselves to others. With their mother joining them from Arizona to help get started, their dream of a family private practice become reality exactly twelve years and one day after Bryan’s “life-changing injury”! On June 9th, 2003, they opened Rehab United Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, Inc.!

Arthritis & Physical Therapy 🦴

If you’re living with arthritis, movement might feel like the last thing you want to do. But in many cases, the right kind of movement is one of the best treatments available.

Physical therapy can help people with arthritis by improving joint mobility, muscle strength, and overall function, which can reduce pain and make daily activities easier.

A physical therapist may recommend options such as:
• Targeted strengthening exercises to support the joints
• Mobility and stretching work to improve range of motion
• Manual therapy to help reduce stiffness
• Movement retraining to reduce stress on affected joints
• Lifestyle and activity modifications to help you stay active safely

Arthritis doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you enjoy. With the right guidance, physical therapy can help you stay active, manage symptoms, and move with more confidence.

If joint pain is limiting your daily life, a PT can help create a plan tailored specifically to you. 💪

"yaaa their knee is looking chopped. Patient said pain level 6-7 (lol). Performed frontal and sagittal plane assessments, but they honestly popped off and ate it up with ROM"

(we are just kidding of course 😉)

Could Uneven Hips Be Affecting Your Walk? 🚶

If you’ve ever noticed your walk feels “off,” one hip feels tighter, or certain exercises feel uneven, your hips may not be moving the same way on both sides.

When one hip is more restricted or compressed than the other, it can affect how you walk, run, squat, and move through daily activities. Your body may shift weight, rotate, or compensate to get around that limitation.

Sometimes the first step is stretching or activating the more compromised hip to help restore balance. Once that side begins moving better, practicing your normal exercises again can help reinforce more symmetrical movement.

Small imbalances can turn into bigger movement issues over time, but with the right mobility and strengthening work, your hips can start moving together again.

If something feels uneven in your stride or workouts, a Physical Therapist can help identify what’s going on and guide you through the right exercises to correct it.

Pregnancy Pain Isn’t Something You Just Have to “Deal With” 🤰

Many people assume pain during pregnancy is just part of the process—but that’s not always the case. A pelvic floor physical therapist can help address many of the discomforts that come with pregnancy and support your body as it changes.

Some common symptoms that pelvic floor PTs help treat include:
• Pelvic pain or pressure
• Low back or hip pain
• Pain in the p***c bone (often called p***c symphysis pain)
• Tailbone discomfort
• Pain with walking, rolling in bed, or getting out of the car
• Urinary leakage or increased urgency

As your body adapts to pregnancy, your muscles, ligaments, and joints experience increased stress. Pelvic floor physical therapists specialize in evaluating how your core, hips, and pelvic floor muscles work together to support you through these changes.

If you’re experiencing persistent discomfort, difficulty with daily movements, or pelvic symptoms during pregnancy, it may be time to see a pelvic floor PT. Getting the right support can help you move more comfortably during pregnancy and prepare your body for delivery and postpartum recovery. 💙

Celebrating a Big Achievement 🎉

Please join us in congratulating our Clinic Director, Shaugn, on graduating from the Gray Institute for Functional Transformation (GIFT) Fellowship!

The GIFT Fellowship is an intensive 40-week mentorship program designed for movement professionals such as physical therapists, athletic trainers, and performance specialists. The program focuses on Applied Functional Science (AFS)—an approach that integrates physical, biological, and behavioral sciences to better understand how the body moves and why dysfunction occurs.

Through this advanced training, Shaugn deepened her ability to assess movement patterns and identify the root cause of pain or dysfunction, rather than just treating symptoms. As part of the program, she also earned certification in Functional Manual Reaction (FMR), a hands-on treatment approach designed to improve mobility and movement efficiency.

We’re proud to have clinicians who continue to invest in their education so they can bring the highest level of care and movement expertise to our patients. 👏

Weak or Tight Hips? 🤔

“My hips feel so tight.” It’s one of the most common things we hear from patients. But what if your hips aren’t actually tight… they’re weak?

When hip muscles lack strength, other muscles around the joint can start working overtime to compensate. This can create the feeling of “tightness,” even though the real issue is weakness and lack of stability.

One simple way to check? Try a single-leg activity like a single-leg squat, step down, or balance test. If your hips drop, your knee caves inward, or you struggle to stay stable, it may be a sign your hip muscles need strengthening rather than stretching.

The good news: once you identify the root cause, you can target the right solution.

If you’re unsure whether your hips are tight, weak, or a combination of both, a Physical Therapist can assess your movement and create a plan to get you moving better and feeling stronger. 💪
