This Veterans' Day we invited all our Veterans to attend our annual Veterans' Day Recognition BBQ where they were all acknowledged and thanked for their service. Starting off our celebration our band, The Sweethearts of Swing and The Boys in the Band played a beautiful military anthem melody to recognize all branches of service. Bob Beavers led a captivating speech about the history of Veterans' Day and how appreciated they are every day. Aiding Bob in the ceremony, Johnathan from "A Better Solution in Home Care", explained our Missing Man table display and how it represents those courageous men and women who did not make it home. Following Johnathan's eloquent explanation, he and Raul, from "A Better Solution in Home Care", passed out the Veteran Certificates & pins as their names were announced.

Thank you to all our service men and women, active or retired, for your bravery and sacrifice for our country.

Thank you to all our staff for their assistance in making this event as meaningful as it was for our Veterans.

A group of adventurous veterans, their spouses and friends joined us at the Navy SEAL Museum this past Wednesday to explore what all they had to see. This museum offers access into the world of the U.S. Navy SEALS and their predecessors via a collection of interactive, immersive exhibits, state of the art galleries and engaging educational opportunities. Whilst there they were invited to take part in a virtual reality rescue mission where they saved some hostages from enemy forces.

A big thank you to the museum and the docent that toured our group, Thomas Leonard. Our residents raved about the knowledgeable docent and how accommodating the museum was for our seniors.

Thank you to Johnathan Burgi, our "A Pure Heart Veteran's Club" coordinator for joining us and helping to coordinate this wonderful outing.

What a beautiful day to celebrate our crafters! Residents that attend our Arts & Crafts class were invited to display their pieces to their neighbors, and they didn't disappoint! We held an Art Reception in their honor to celebrate their creative talents.

A little over 5 years ago our Arts & Crafts program began creating fun, vibrant pieces from holiday decor to just fun art pieces for residents to enjoy in their rooms or on their doors. Each piece is unique to the maker, showing off their creativity and artistic ability. Their neighbors were excited to see what all our crafters have made and were delighted to see how talented our crafters are.

Residents celebrated Día de los Mu***os with our Housekeeping Department today! Each team member of the Housekeeping Department dressed up in traditional attire from a different state in Mexico. Alma King, our Housekeeping Director, explained the history behind Día de los Mu***os and the significance of the marigold flowers used to decorate the Ofrenda. Residents learned that Día de los Mu***os is a multi-day holiday that is celebrated all over the world by different cultures in their own ways. The first night of Día de los Mu***os celebrates the children, while the second night is to celebrate the adults that have passed away. According to tradition the souls of the deceased return to Earth to visit and provide wisdom to their living relatives on the nights of Día de los Mu***os.

What a beautiful tradition to honor our loved ones on the other side. Thank you to all the staff involved in making this event happen!

Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents have taken part in "Operation Christmas Child" for the last three years with the help from resident, Kay Pickett. Kay is coordinating this effort for our community through the RB Presbyterian Church and has turned this into an annual event! Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse, a Christian Relief organization. Their goal is to spread love and kindness to children all over the world who may not have received a gift for Christmas without the generosity of kind-hearted people like Kay. We are proud to be a community of people helping people.

Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents partnered up with RB Presbyterian Church as well as the Interfaith Community Service organization four years ago to provide over 200 sandwich sack lunches every month for the less fortunate individuals in the community. That amounts to approximately 9,600 lunches our residents have prepared so far! Our residents love to be able to help those in need, and this outreach project is just one of the many ways that they give back to the community.

"Music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."
- Billy Joel

Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents had the pleasure of attending the Coastal Community Concert Band's October show "Showtime! from Hollywood to Broadway" this past Saturday. They enjoyed famous tunes from The Phantom of the Opera, John Williams, The Mask of Zorro, Chicago and many more. They had a fabulous time and are looking forward to the next performance!

What a gorgeous day to explore!

Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents took a tour of the Marston House and Museum at Balboa Park. They enjoyed learning about George Marston and his philanthropic and naturalistic nature from Robin Lakin, a docent from the Save Our Heritage Organization. She was a wealth of knowledge about the Marston House, Family, and gardens.

As a naturalist he loved the outdoors and made sure his 5 acre garden was full to the brim with lush exotic and native plant varieties, including geraniums. Which earned him, his legacy symbol of the geranium. His friend and noted pioneer horticulturist, Katie O. Sessions, helped with the acquisition of the plants as well as aid his landscape designer with ideas to redesign the garden in the 1920s.

Marston was ahead of his time by wanting to preserve San Diego's history, as well as encourage women to participate in sports. He had encouraged his daughters to be involved in outdoor sports in a time when women did not normally take part in such endeavors. Marston became known as the "Father of Balboa Park" due to his purchase of Presidio Park in 1907 where he built a private historical park in 1925 then later donated it to the city in 1929. Marston was also a big supporter of his employees by not only paying them the highest wages in the city but also by silently aiding in their family members' move to the United States by sponsoring them.

Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents were visited by the Origami4Good Club from Rancho Bernardo High School. Origami4Good is a group of students that make origami and go to various retirement communities to teach seniors how to create beautiful pieces of origami. Residents joined us in the Banquet Room and learned how to create a crab and fish out of brightly colored paper. Residents were all smiles over learning how to do something new! We are looking forward to the club's next visit.
