SDSU Counseling & Psychological Services

SDSU Counseling & Psychological Services Welcome to the official page for Counseling & Psychological Services at San Diego State Uni C&PS is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Our goal at Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) is to help students benefit fully from their college experience by supporting the personal, social, and emotional well-being of all students at SDSU. Our services for students include short-term individual, couples and group counseling, as well as crisis intervention. We also provide consultation and referral services to students, staff, faculty and parents. All non-mandated services are free for current SDSU students. We encourage you to take advantage of the confidential services offered. Students who require immediate psychological help are seen on an emergency basis by calling C&PS at (619) 594-5220 during business hours. After hours, students can call the San Diego Access and Crisis 24-hour Hotline at (800) 724-7240. Other emergency services include: Student Health Services Nurse Advisory Line at (888) 594-5281; or University Police at (619) 594-1991. Please note, although we interact with other facebook users on this page, this site is NOT regularly monitored for comments. If you are interested in getting in contact with SDSU C&PS, please contact us directly.

Never called us before? We know it can be nerve-wracking. Knowing what to expect can help you take that leap! Here’s the typical process when someone calls C&PS:

1. Have your RED ID and a good contact phone number ready and call our office (619-594-5220).

2. Someone at our front desk answers and asks how they can help you.

3. Most people call because they want to talk to a therapist, and that is all you need to say! “I’m interested in speaking with a therapist.”

4. The front desk staff may ask if you’ve been to C&PS before and explain the next steps in the process.

5. Staff may then ask about your general availability to set you up with a phone consultation, which is a brief phone call with a therapist to get you started. During this call you can discuss what you’re looking for and work with the therapist to figure out how we can best help.

Still nervous? That’s okay! We’re here to support you and walk you through it.

We can’t always choose how to spend our time, especially when responsibilities like work can’t be negotiated. However, time management techniques can help you understand and organize what you do with the time within your control so you can do more of what fulfills you.

The Covey Time Management Matrix breaks down tasks into what’s important (meaningful/beneficial) versus what’s urgent (time sensitive/has a deadline) in 4 quadrants. How to do it:

1. List all the tasks, big and small, that you do in a day, including going to class, cooking meals, scrolling on your phone, working out, etc.
2. Write down any deadlines or scheduled times.
3. Try to fit each task into one of the 4 quadrants.

Q1: Urgent and important - Upcoming exams, some doctor’s appointments, etc. (Not always enjoyable, but need to be managed/prioritized)

Q2: Not urgent but still important - Exercise, time with friends/family, planning for your future (Focus on this section to help you meet long-term goals)

Q3: Urgent but not important - Phone notifications, interruptions, some requests from others (Setting boundaries can help minimize these)

Q4: Not urgent and not important - Mindless scrolling, distracting activities that aren’t fulfilling, things you do to procrastinate (Limit these when possible)

What do you think about this time management matrix? Let us know below!

This Fall, drop-in support is available Mondays to Wednesdays through Talk It Out.

You know how professors have office hours where you can ask a question or talk through an issue? This is our therapists’ version of office hours!

Stop by and check in for 15-20 minutes to get guidance on a specific problem or ask questions about therapy or other resources. No appointment needed!

Though Talk It Out is not therapy or mental health treatment, this is a chance to have an informal, confidential conversation to get a professional perspective.

Visit https://sacd.sdsu.edu/cps/talk-with-a-therapist/talkitout for more info!

Groups are a great way to work through concerns with the support of others who really get it.

Workshops can teach you some new ways to manage your mental health and well-being through interactive discussion and activities.

Interested in any of these? Give us a call at 619-594-5220 or check the link in our bio to learn more about each specific group including how to join.

1 simple thing you can do right now for your mental health this semester

Let’s be honest, college can be very stressful. But since we know that already, we can plan ahead for it!

While things are still low key, write down:
1. How you know you’re starting to get stressed (what changes happen in your behavior/body/thinking?)

2. What activities help you relax/de-stress, and

3. Who you usually turn to for support (maybe even include C&PS's number so you have it on hand)

Keep this list where you can find it later. By thinking about this and writing it down now, you can enjoy these first few weeks knowing you have a plan in place if things get tough down the road.

How do you prepare for a new semester?
