A few weekends ago at the OB Holiday Parade 🛸✨

Nothing beats seeing our staff, friends, and families light up at the parade each year, both as participants and spectators! Grateful for this community that makes what we do feel less like work and more like out-of-this-world fun ☮️

At Ocean Beach Speech, we love making therapy fun, motivating, and child-led! Today’s adventure? Cracking open dinosaur eggs, exploring dino toys, and reading How to Catch a Dinosaur. 📚🦖✨

By tapping into what kids love (and let’s be honest—dinosaurs are a BIG favorite 🦕), we build literacy and language skills in a way that feels like play. When children are engaged and excited, the learning naturally follows! 💬💡

We want to take a moment to wish all the families in our a community a wonderful back-to-school season!

As routines shift and backpacks get packed, remember: change can be exciting and overwhelming—especially for little learners. 🧠💬

Here are a few tips to help with smoother transitions:
1️⃣ Build in “buffer time” — Mornings go better when kids aren’t rushed from the moment they wake up.
2️⃣ Practice the new routine — Walk through drop-off, packing lunches, or homework time a few days before school starts.
3️⃣ Keep communication open — Encourage kids to share how they’re feeling (with words, pictures, or even a visual “feelings meter”).
4️⃣ Give grace — New schedules can be tiring. Expect some extra emotions in the first few weeks.

☀️ SUMMER STORIES ☀️ have been on repeat in our clinic! Be on the lookout for some of these SLP favorites at your local library:

🧜‍♀️ How to Catch a Mermaid by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton: a fun adventure with a very clever mermaid

🛶 Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen: a funny story about an encounter with a curious baby whale!

👵🏻 There Was an Old Mermaid Who Swallowed a Shark by Lucille Colandro: a fishy twist on an old classic, with lots of rhymes and sea life facts!

We love using stories in therapy to target skills like comprehension, building vocabulary, early phonological awareness skills, using correct grammar to retell story events, and soooo much more.
