Sad news. May he rest in peace.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Mark Hallett, a pioneering neurologist whose groundbreaking work transformed the understanding of dystonia and spasmodic dysphonia.
As Chief of the Human Motor Control Section at NINDS, Dr. Hallett dedicated more than 40 years to uncovering how the brain controls movement. His discoveries on loss of inhibition and abnormal brain plasticity reshaped how we view — and treat — movement and voice disorders.
Dr. Hallett was also a valued friend to Dysphonia International, sharing his insight through symposiums, research collaborations, and the 2005 NIH/NIDCD workshop on spasmodic dysphonia. His mentorship inspired generations of scientists, including Dr. Christy Ludlow, our first Scientific Director.
He will be remembered not only for his brilliance but also for his humility, kindness, and genuine curiosity. His impact will continue to guide research, inspire collaboration, and bring hope to all living with dystonia and related voice disorders.
