What we now know about how to fight the delta variant of COVID

An expert, Dr. J. Stacey Klutts, explains why vaccines — and masks — are so important, and why delta is different and more dangerous.

He is the Special Assistant to the National Director of Pathology and Lab Medicine for the entire Veterans Affairs system, with a specific role in advising on elements of COVID testing for the system.

1. Delta Variant sticks "Like Gorilla Glue" whereas the other strains were covered in syrup, this is like fast drying gorilla glue

2. Viral Loads are 1000 times higher than the previous variants

3. Much more Infectious (higher viral load plus extra stickiness)

4. Five days: The viral loads in the throats of vaccinated persons who become infected with delta rises at identical rates as in unvaccinated persons, but only for the first few days. After five days or so, the viral loads in the vaccinated person start to quickly drop whereas those in the unvaccinated person persist.

5. Young people: Round 2 is primarily being observed in younger patients than in Round 1.

6. Vaccines are working and doing what they are expected to do

7. Preventing Disease and Death. The Vaccine shows an 8-fold reduction in the development of any symptomatic disease secondary to delta. For hospitalization, it is a 25-fold reduction. That’s 25 times! Remarkable. For death, it is also 25 times!

8. Those Vaccinated should still wear a mask. An infected, vaccinated person can transmit this very infectious virus to others for at least a couple of days. So, as before, you are being asked to wear a mask to primarily protect others.

9. Tsunami wave on the horizon. If haven’t yet been affected, run like hell to metaphorical higher ground — get vaccinated, wear a mask.

Wellness Wednesday!

What happens when COVID-19 symptoms don’t go away? In some people who recover from COVID-19, lingering health problems can wreak havoc for months.

Long COVID: What is post-COVID syndrome?

Mild or moderate COVID-19 lasts about two weeks for most people. But others experience lingering health problems even when they have recovered from the acute phase of the illness.

In such patients, there is no longer live coronavirus running amok in the body. If tested, the person would test negative for the coronavirus, but they might be severely debilitated nonetheless.

Long COVID can happen in people who have mild symptoms, not just extreme cases.

According to the CDC, the most common lasting symptoms are fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain. Other issues include cognitive problems, difficulty concentrating, depression, muscle pain, headache, rapid heartbeat and intermittent fever.

*****The best way to avoid post-COVID-19 complications is to prevent infection with the coronavirus in the first place. Practicing coronavirus precautions and getting a COVID-19 VACCINE as soon as it is available to you are effective ways to avoid getting COVID-19.******

Understanding the seriousness of COVID-19 and its potential for long-term, debilitating symptoms is good motivation for protecting yourself and others by wearing a face mask consistently and properly whenever you are around people from outside your household; maintaining physical distance of at least six feet from people outside of your household; and practicing careful hand hygiene.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, was identified in December 2019. There is still a lot to learn about it, but our understanding of the virus and COVID-19 is evolving by the day.

Researchers will learn more about how and why the coronavirus affects different people in such a variety of ways, and why some people experience no symptoms at all while others have life-threatening organ damage or lasting disability.

Happy Wellness Wednesday!!

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Worldwide, 50 million people are living with Alzheimer's and other dementias.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia. Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a group of symptoms.

Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases.

Alzheimer's worsens over time. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.

Alzheimer's has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues. Although current Alzheimer's treatments cannot stop Alzheimer's from progressing, they can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer's and their caregivers.

Wellness Wednesday from APfC!

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother’s day is a perfect excuse to get out and enjoy some fun activities with your mom. Depending on what your mom likes to do, and the weather forecast for that day, there are plenty of fun options to get involved in.

While mobility, overall health, and weather may play a role in what you can do, there are activities for outdoors, indoors, and seniors with dementia.

Some suggested outside mother’s day activities, include:

Stroll in the park
Outdoor hobbies
Botanical gardens
Outdoor events
Farmer’s market

If the weather outside does not end up being what you were hoping for, it is always a smart idea to have a contingency plan in the reserves. Some recommendations might be:

Prepare a meal
Play some games
Listen to music
Go to a museum or art gallery
Watch a movie or TV series

For moms with Alzheimer’s or dementia, mother’s day activities might be a bit more limited. But that is not to say you still can’t have some fun. Some possible mother’s day options for seniors with dementia, might be:

Cooking or baking
Arts and crafts
Games
Spa day

However you plan to spend your day with Mom, enjoy every minute.
