Why Are Your Eyes Red in the Morning?
Waking up with red eyes is common and often caused by temporary irritation during sleep. Overnight, tear production decreases, which can lead to dryness—making your eyes look red or feel gritty. Environmental factors like dust, allergens, air conditioning, or dry air can also play a role.
You may notice symptoms like redness, dryness, itching, burning, watery eyes, mild swelling, crusting, or brief blurry vision that clears after blinking. These usually improve as your eyes rehydrate during the day.
Common causes include dry eye, allergies (like dust mites or pet dander), poor sleep, environmental dryness, and eyelid inflammation. While often harmless, frequent or persistent redness may signal an underlying issue.
Tips to reduce morning redness:
• Keep bedding clean
• Use a humidifier
• Stay hydrated
• Limit screen time before bed
• Use lubricating eye drops
When to get checked:
If redness lasts all day or comes with pain, discharge, light sensitivity, or vision changes, it’s time for a professional evaluation.
