Part 2: Keeping toddlers calm & keeping kids calm when meeting new people, even family!!

It can be difficult to gauge with family because you feel close with them, but they’re ~still effectively strangers~ to your children unless you see them regularly.

Hi 👋! I’m Ms. Elizabeth, or “Ms M” to my non-verbal toddlers. I have been a licensed bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist aka Speech Therapist, for Over 22 years, and I’m here to share what I’ve learned over the years from amazing parents and additional trainings after my Master’s degree in Speech & Language Therapy. After hours, I enjoy playing with my pup, swing dancing, singing soprano, and am learning to play the ukulele.

As always, all of my posts are generally accurate for most situations and are Not meant to be taken as medical advice. If you have questions or need direct assistance with your or your child’s communication, please contact me for a consultation or evaluation, or another SLP in your area.

Do follow BabbleBetter for more tips on babies, toddlers, speech language development, behavior, and even to have less of an accent when speaking Spanish.

Also I’d appreciate a follow to this & my other socials; Link in bio for my discount code on hearing protection, Amazon shop, and my other social media.

Toddlers and children in general can have a difficult time with meeting new people, and getting together with large groups, even when they’re family.

Please remember to follow and share to people who have little ones or more “shy” children for tips for how to make Thanksgiving get togethers easier on them! 🦃

Tips from a Speech-Language Pathologist:
Food is a good motivator for your child to try to talk. Always name the food before giving. See if they can ask for it by name before giving.
☀️pick an easier word to say when possible if they can’t say many sounds, like “puffs” instead of “cereal.”
☀️ Repeat the word many times, and don’t use “it, or those” general words.
☀️Aaaaand, repeat. It may take days or weeks for them to imitate, or it might be right away. Don’t give up and keep naming the things to them with the consistent word you picked.
☀️Stay consistent with the words that you choose. So, if it’s Puffs for cereal, keep it to that name.

Giving our children opportunities by letting them ask multiple times to receive more of a snack is one way to help our children learn to talk.

!! Tips from a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (aka speech therapist):

The transition to speaking from the pointing and reaching stage is often where parents realized that their baby isn’t “learning to talk” as they should. If your baby is over 18months and mostly still in this stage, please get an evaluation, and work on the techniques that I provide, until then. Your future child will thank you!! 🙏🙂

Tips from a Speech Language Parhologist with 22 years’ experience:

If you’re saying things, are they watching?

Are they in tune with you or not? What about with their Speech Pathologist? Are they in tune with them? Are they paying attention? Do they have good report? And the biggest one is

how much are you and the family involved in what they’re doing? ‘Cause one hour a week with speech therapy is a lot less work on a particular skill

than the whole family doing it throughout the week.

Whenever I see really great gains from the families that I work with, it’s because the whole family has been doing it, and they’ve been doing it the whole week, and they’re consistent. Hope this helps.

Follow BabbleBetter for more & on YOUTUBE Plz. Thank you! 🙏 💜 Ms M

Did you know that there are FREE programs run by the state for babies and toddlers? They check ALL areas of development. It can take a month or more to get seen after filling out all of the paperwork. That is why I recommend going in right at 18 months for speech, or earlier if there is a developmental@concern.

Often, your child will qualify if they are premature.

Follow BabbleBetter for more baby/ toddler development advice, mostly about speech/language/ hearing/ behavior.

Most children with autism do not look like other children with autism. You don’t have to have ALL of the qualities to qualify. As the saying goes, when you meet a person with autism, then you’ve met a person with autism.

In my clinical experience of over 22 years, no 2 people who had autism, event at the baby and toddler ages, looked the same!
