Tips from a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist:
If your baby stops making sounds or combinations of sounds, and it is Not because of siblings speaking for them, then Absolutely Contact me for an evaluation.

Have you noticed your child being able to name you or things around them and then stop? That means there is likely an issue with their language learning and they need to be taught directly so they will develop enough language by the time they turn 5!!

There is typical language development and then the less typical type called ā€œgestaltā€ language development. It’s not ā€œwrongā€ or ā€œbad,ā€ but it is dio& requires a different method of growing functional communication as it develops. Listen for my description of both, and follow for more ideas about learning languages, speech, behavior, Spanish, and any other questions you may have.

When your session has some friendly Siamese friends that make you laugh, and also help your toddler name ā€œcatā€ and the sound they make, I call it a win! šŸ¤—

These 2 were kittens when I started. It seems they’re closer to cats in this photo, would you agree?

Tips from a Speech-Language Pathologist with 23+ years of experience:

Toddler Parent Challenge 3!

we often get into such a groove of caring for our children’s needs before they need them that we forget the language piece. As adults, we often do not see that we are dealing with new little beings that don’t have the words for things yet. It’s like remembering when you learned how to tie your shoes. Do you recall that?

Parent Challenge 3: use pointing and giving choices as a good way to teach what things are called, and to inspire your child to imitate you.

Only about 50% of what toddlers say is expected to be understandable to adult adults, even familiar adults. So don’t expect to perfectly understand them, but reward their attempts to speak.

If your child is not trying to imitate you by 15 to 18 months, please binge watch my toddler teaching videos to get some ideas on what you can do now to get them to speak more, and also contact me for an evaluation.

If you’re unable to pay, you can look up your state’s ā€œ0-3 toddler programā€ for the state to pay if your child qualifies. I contract with the one in San Diego, California, so you can ask for me directly with them, and I highly recommend the program!!

Is there a speech delay? Parents often feel the need to wait until someone tells them that they’re certain their child has a delay in a specific area. Often times, waiting leaves the child behind and struggling…. Sometimes for the rest of their school years.

Recent studies show that if your child isn’t Ready for School and Lesrning by age 5, it will affect what options they have for later success in life at age 18.

So, please contact me for questions or assistance. Or, someone else in your nearest community. Your child will thank you! šŸ’—

Do you quietly leave food and drinks around the bony or toddler area so they can grab it at will? I see this ALL THE TIME when I’m in family homes!!

If so, you’re not alone, & you’re also missing out on some great opportunities for interaction and learning for your child.

Do what I say in this video-> Have the food and drink items With You but easily at hand, so you can respond quickly. Food/drink are AMAZING motivators for communication if you use them wisely. šŸ˜‰

Please leave a šŸ’— below if you’re going to try this tip soon! šŸ™

Tips from a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist:

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked with families and the child never says, ā€œwant upā€ at ages as late as three and four years old. It’s one of the most often desired things by children, and parents often will just respond to physical gestures.

This is the reasoning behind this challenge. Pay attention to both sides:
Can you say want up without showing your arms and they will raise their arms to be lifted up?
Do they ask to be lifted up with words, or just reaching up, or pulling at your clothing to be picked up?

Before working with values and toddlers, I just thought toys were to keep them entertained and have fun.

As a pediatric Speech Pathologist (aka speech therapist), it hit me like a sack of bricks at one point: ā€œOh!! This toy helps that skill grow!!ā€ And I started to look at toys differently. Not just as an attention grab, but for the deeper use.

Now, when evaluating babies and toddlers, I don’t just look at what they can and can’t say. I also look to see if they’ve developed the skills they need to have BEFORE talking will begin.

One of them is presented here. Children need to know their words will get them a desired result (mom/dad’s reaction, or maybe food, for example,) in order to motivate them to want to talk.

The information I present in my social media is what I’ve taught to families as I’ve been a speech-language pathologist for over 22 years.

And, there are free programs in the US for babies and toddlers under 3 years old. You really need to apply before 2 years old because it ends at the 3rd birthday on the dot!!

I’m setting up a subscription program this week (January 2026) to be able to interact with me and ask questions.

I also offer Online Courses on my website (here shortly) and enter your email at BabbleBetter.com for a 25% off the first month discount code. šŸ’”

You can always hire me directly, also…. Provided we find a time that works with our schedules. šŸ˜†
