Tips from a Speech-Language Pathologist with 23+ years of experience:
Toddler Parent Challenge 3!
we often get into such a groove of caring for our childrenās needs before they need them that we forget the language piece. As adults, we often do not see that we are dealing with new little beings that donāt have the words for things yet. Itās like remembering when you learned how to tie your shoes. Do you recall that?
Parent Challenge 3: use pointing and giving choices as a good way to teach what things are called, and to inspire your child to imitate you.
Only about 50% of what toddlers say is expected to be understandable to adult adults, even familiar adults. So donāt expect to perfectly understand them, but reward their attempts to speak.
If your child is not trying to imitate you by 15 to 18 months, please binge watch my toddler teaching videos to get some ideas on what you can do now to get them to speak more, and also contact me for an evaluation.
If youāre unable to pay, you can look up your stateās ā0-3 toddler programā for the state to pay if your child qualifies. I contract with the one in San Diego, California, so you can ask for me directly with them, and I highly recommend the program!!
