Let’s be Really Meaningful with the words that we use!! Only say MY when you’re talking about things or people that you want to keep in your life. Use THE for everything else.

The ex, the pain, the anxiety….

As a saying I heard goes, ā€œlanguage doesn’t describe our world. It creates it.ā€ Make sure you’re creating a world you desire with the language that you use. šŸ’—

When toddlers want something and you say no, then give it to them for fear of a temper tantrum, that actually makes them tantrum MORE than if you ā€œstuck your ground.ā€

In the early years, you Really Are TRAINING your children your boundaries of what you will and will not accept, and how to treat you and others in the world.

If they learn ā€˜I just need to scream and cry and I receive X thing I want,’ then they will do it! They learn that it works! Why would they ā€œuse their wordsā€ or learn to ask for something when they know they screaming and crying ALREADY works?!? AND, doing something different is harder right now… it’s a skill that takes effort right now.

They need motivation to put in effort to gain that skill. Which means, for the toddlers that tantrum, to wait out the tantrum (via a specific technique), and they learn to ask instead of tantrumming or hitting or those less desirable behaviors that they often try.

Tips from a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist:
If your baby stops making sounds or combinations of sounds, and it is Not because of siblings speaking for them, then Absolutely Contact me for an evaluation.

Have you noticed your child being able to name you or things around them and then stop? That means there is likely an issue with their language learning and they need to be taught directly so they will develop enough language by the time they turn 5!!

There is typical language development and then the less typical type called ā€œgestaltā€ language development. It’s not ā€œwrongā€ or ā€œbad,ā€ but it is dio& requires a different method of growing functional communication as it develops. Listen for my description of both, and follow for more ideas about learning languages, speech, behavior, Spanish, and any other questions you may have.

When your session has some friendly Siamese friends that make you laugh, and also help your toddler name ā€œcatā€ and the sound they make, I call it a win! šŸ¤—

These 2 were kittens when I started. It seems they’re closer to cats in this photo, would you agree?

Tips from a Speech-Language Pathologist with 23+ years of experience:

Toddler Parent Challenge 3!

we often get into such a groove of caring for our children’s needs before they need them that we forget the language piece. As adults, we often do not see that we are dealing with new little beings that don’t have the words for things yet. It’s like remembering when you learned how to tie your shoes. Do you recall that?

Parent Challenge 3: use pointing and giving choices as a good way to teach what things are called, and to inspire your child to imitate you.

Only about 50% of what toddlers say is expected to be understandable to adult adults, even familiar adults. So don’t expect to perfectly understand them, but reward their attempts to speak.

If your child is not trying to imitate you by 15 to 18 months, please binge watch my toddler teaching videos to get some ideas on what you can do now to get them to speak more, and also contact me for an evaluation.

If you’re unable to pay, you can look up your state’s ā€œ0-3 toddler programā€ for the state to pay if your child qualifies. I contract with the one in San Diego, California, so you can ask for me directly with them, and I highly recommend the program!!
