Dear Friends,
We are all deeply saddened by the recent tragic deaths and abuses that have occurred in the country that we all call home. We also acknowledge that the manifestation of institutionalized racism within our country has divided us and stained our history for centuries. We also acknowledge the long history of racism within the medical field that has led to differences in health care access, certain diseases, and experiences with medical providers.
We mourn for everyone that has been directly or indirectly impacted by discrimination of any form. OCC firmly stands against all forms of racism, inequality, and discrimination. Medical research shows that racism adversely affects children and their families’ health. Reference: “The Impact of Racism on Child and Adolescent Health” >> https://bit.ly/2V3B1PG
As we identify our own intrinsic biases, we encourage all of us to learn and grow from the discussions being held around the nation. To our Black patients, colleagues, and friends, we are listening and we strongly support you.
In this moment, it is the time to actively advocate for change by working together to dismantle structural racism, improve the quality of life and health of all our patients. Within our organization, we will continue with compassion and empathy as we strive towards education, understanding, self-reflection, and acceptance for all. Self education will challenge world views on these complex issues which is sorely needed at this time. We urge everyone to stand together to face the truth of racism in this country, embracing diversity and inclusion to help those in need achieve their life’s potential.
Sincerely,
R. Mitchell Hiserote, D.O.
OCC President and Interim Medical Director
