April is Autism Acceptance Month and today is World Autism Acceptance/Awareness Day! The mission of this month extends far beyond a date on the calendar. Across the country, we are seeing a powerful movement of autistic individuals, dedicated families, and tireless allies joining forces. Together, we aren’t just raising awareness; we are advocating for systemic change and building a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive on their own terms.

This progress wouldn't be possible without the incredible groups we partner with every day. A Heartfelt Thank You:

To our Families: Thank you for your resilience, your partnership, and for allowing us to be part of your child’s journey.

To our Clinicians: Thank you for your clinical excellence and for your commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care.

To our Advocacy & Healthcare Partners: Thank you for working with us to break down the barriers to make therapy accessible to all.

We are proud to stand with the autism community this month, and every month, as we work toward a future of limitless possibility.

If a routine isn't clicking, ask: is it too long, complicated, rigid, or demanding for the current skill set? Often, powerful tools like visuals or environmental changes can smooth things out. Try adjusting the routine first – you might be surprised at the difference it makes.

Verbal praise is most effective when delivered within 3 seconds. Saying 'Great job!' is good, but 'Great job cleaning up your toys all by yourself' tells them exactly what they did right. Specificity makes praise truly impactful.

Verbal praise is the easiest and most effective tool for guiding children. While it can be faded out, who doesn't love hearing they did a fantastic job? Even simple acknowledgments, like thanking a partner for emptying the dishwasher, feel great. Everyone thrives on positive reinforcement.

To a young child, not getting their favorite blueberries can feel like the worst thing ever. They lack the life context we have to understand that minor issues aren't catastrophic. What seems small to us might be their biggest challenge yet.

Many parents believe yelling and timeouts stop bad behavior. But does it truly work long-term? Often, it's a temporary fix that can fuel anger and imitation. Experts advocate for reinforcement: reward good behavior to teach kids what you *do* want to see, not just punish what you don't.

Does your child struggle with loud noises, certain textures, or specific smells? They might be sensory avoidant, meaning their senses are overwhelmed. Or perhaps they're a sensory seeker, always needing more tactile input like slime or Play-Doh. Understanding these differences is key to helping them regulate.

Children learn by watching the world around them, including what they see on screens. Are the characters they watch demonstrating healthy coping skills, like taking deep breaths or asking for breaks? Or are they modeling outbursts and anger? What you and media expose them to shapes their own skills.

Emotions aren't good or bad, they're just signals. Learn to recognize your blue (tired/sick), green (calm/ready), yellow (escalated/frustrated), and red (out of control/terrified) zones. Discover strategies to return to the green zone and better regulate your feelings.

Ever feel so overwhelmed you can't even decide what to eat? That's analysis paralysis, a common sign of emotional dysregulation. When we're stressed or frustrated, our ability to think, plan, and act can shut down.
