So you’re curious about subfascial breast augmentation…

Here’s what makes the subfascial method different from other approaches:

Instead of being placed beneath the muscle or under the breast tissue, subfascial implants are positioned just under the layer of fascia located over the chest muscle, creating enhanced yet natural-looking results.

The subfascial method might not be the best fit for every patient… But for the right candidates, it’s nothing short of perfect! ✨

“Are there any downsides to the subfascial method for breast implants?”

While there are plenty of benefits to choosing subfascial implants, there are 2 essential things you should know if you’re considering this method for your breast augmentation procedure:

- This method offers less soft tissue coverage in the upper pole (the upper part of the breast tissue), creating a less natural-looking appearance when combined with larger implants or in patients who are very thin

- There is slightly less protection against capsular contracture, or the formation of constrictive breast tissue around the implant, which can lead to pain or distortion of the implant over time

Q&A: What does the recovery process for subfascial breast implants look like?

Unlike submuscular techniques, the subfascial approach to breast implants offers a fast and easy recovery process.

Post-op, you can expect to experience less soreness and inflammation which means a faster return to exercise and working out!

The best part? You’ll begin to bounce back within days of your surgery and start feeling like yourself again in no time. 🤍

Does the subfascial approach provide the same soft tissue coverage as under-the-muscle implants?

The subfascial approach for breast implants offers less soft tissue coverage at the upper pole (or the upper portion of the breast), which is why patient and implant selection are such important factors when considering this technique.

“Animation deformity” refers to the visible movement of a breast implant when the chest muscles are flexed.

Due to their placement over the muscle, subfascial implants have zero risk of animation deformity compared to under-the-muscle implants, as this issue only occurs when implants are placed under the muscle.

Why would someone considering breast implants choose the subfascial approach over the traditional under-the-muscle technique?

It all comes down to personal preference!

Whether they have a highly active lifestyle or would prefer not to alter their anatomy with an under-the-muscle implant, the subfascial approach is the perfect option for patients who would like to continue using their pectoral muscles as normal post-op. 🤍

“Do you need to cut the chest muscle to insert subfascial breast implants?”

The subfascial approach for breast implants does NOT require Dr. Xu to cut the chest muscle, which means that the post-surgical recovery period will be much faster (and easier!) than if you were to choose the submuscular approach.

Subfascial implants are worthwhile for anyone who values a speedy recovery process and wants to:

🤍 Feel more like themselves within days, not weeks.
🤍 Get back into the gym quickly.
🤍 Preserve their pectoral muscle’s natural anatomy and maintain its optimal function post-recovery.

Exploring subfascial breast augmentation with Dr. Xu. ✨

“Subfascial breast augmentation” is a relatively new term in the world of breast implants.

It refers to a variation of an over-the-muscle plane of placement that involves carefully placing an implant beneath the fascia located over the chest muscle.

Join Dr. Xu as she explains some differences between under-the-muscle and over-the-muscle placement in her latest reel!
