đ¨ New GLP-1 & Nutrition Advisory: What Clinicians Need to Know đ¨
The 2025 GLP-1 prescribing advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society marks an important step forward in how we think about these medications.
In the latest episode of The Root Cause Medicine Podcast from Rupa Health, I sat down with Lara Zakaria PharmD MS CNS IFMCPâa pharmacist and functional medicine practitionerâto unpack what this means for providers.
Lara reframes GLP-1s not as a stand-alone solution, but as a window of opportunity to build long-term health through:
đĽ Nutrition counseling to prevent deficiencies (below) and screening for eating disorders
đŞ Muscle preservation with adequate protein + resistance training to reduce the average 20% of weight loss from muscle
𧪠Lab monitoring (iron, vitamin D, thyroid, calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamins A, D, E, K, B1, B12, C)
đż GI support strategies (hydration, magnesium, ginger, bitters) to address the 24% of people who have GI symptoms
đ¤ Team-based care with dietitians, trainers, mental health professionals, and pharmacists
Providers will walk away with evidence-informed strategies to reduce discontinuation, optimize patient outcomes, and build sustainable behavior change around GLP-1 therapy.

My friend and favorite holistic psychiatrist is back on the podcast to talk to us about what to do for anxiety when labs are normal.
If you caught our first episode, you heard her discuss all of the physiological root causes of anxiety that doctors should be working up for patients â including blood sugar swings, nutrient deficiencies and more.
In this episode, we talk about what to do when our anxiety is pointing us towards something thatâs truly in need of our attention, and the tools we can use to alleviate it like movement breathwork, dancing, and more.
Listening to Dr. Ellen is calming in itself. She has an incredible voice and so many sayings that I find myself using over and over again when I tell people about her work. This episode was truly a joy to film and I think will be a joy to listen to.
If youâre looking for more tools to help your clients or loved ones with anxiety, this one is for you.

đ§ đĽThe amount of feedback weâve gotten on this weeksâ episode on advanced approaches to managing cholesterol and cardiovascular risk with is so exciting. I highly recommend it to anyone in healthcare or navigating high cholesterol personally.
đ Key insights from this episode:
- High cholesterol has many genetic factors, and if youâre not checking if your client is a synthesizer vs. recycler, youâre missing a big part of the equation.
- Tests like ApoB and Lp(a) can tell us far more than LDL alone.
- Triglycerides are an early warning sign of insulin resistance, and HbA1c should be considered highly personalized given the latest research around the problems encountered when measuring it. This is why trends are so important.
- There are multiple medication options beyond statins (like Zetia and PCSK9 inhibitors), and Dr. Henry breaks them down in the most approachable way Iâve heard yet.
đŻ Whether youâre a provider or a patient, this episode is a masterclass in how to approach lipid panels with nuance and clarity.
đ Bonus: Dr. Henryâs analogies (like cholesterol balls with âsticky handsâ) make it all click.

Two of my favorite humans came together this week to give us the podcast version of a handbook for anyone with endometriosis or who thinks they could have it.
Endometriosis can be a painful and debilitating condition to deal with and up to 10% of American women will experience it at some point in their lives.
Moreover, it can often take from 7 to 12 years to get the right diagnosis đ
Today, weâre doing our part to help change that. We dive deep into endometriosis symptoms, tests, and natural solutions for managing it effectively.
To help us with that, we have and , two experts who themselves have had endometriosis and have dedicated their lives to helping other folks find and heal their root cause â¤ď¸

We launched on Valentineâs Day, 2020. Iâd like to think thatâs because we do everything with love.
I say âweâ because this clinic would not be possible without the dear friends, family members, teachers, mentors, fellow physicians and professionals Iâve met over the past decade whoâve helped to push this movement forward.
Our vision was to create a medical practice that allowed for true connection, kindness, and spectacular, life-changing, whole-person healing. We wanted to use the most advanced science to provide outside-the-box, modern holistic healthcare at an accessible price. We committed ourselves to doing whatever it takes to be a safe space for the LGBTQIA community, those with trauma, folks on the spectrum (all of us!), foster kids and those who feel generally left out of the medical system. We have a lifelong pursuit of excellence and greatness that allows us to serve those with rare conditions and high performers who are looking to push themselves to the next level in their workouts, work or relationships.
In short, we wanted to be a healing space for everyone.
Itâs a tall order to run a clinic like that in 2020.
From what our patients tell us, weâre doing it.
Our success is measured in the number of improved lives, added smiles, and complete transformations that result from each encounter. When we help you become a better parent, a healthier version of yourself, and a more on-fire, passionate and effective individual, thatâs when we know weâre doing it right. Itâs exactly our mission to do whatever it takes to help good people keep doing good in the world. We use advanced lab testing, in-depth analysis, cutting-edge medical therapies and ancient, natural healing modalities to get you there - mind, body and spirit.
