Wishing you all a wonderful Nakamura Night!

Today, the Nobel Prize winning researcher Shuji Nakamura, turns 70. Nakamura-san discovered the blue LED in 1993 and changed countless lives.

Without his discovery, there would be no full-spectrum color mixing, no ColorKinetics, no Geo Mueller, and therefore no Robot Heart at Burning Man!

Help me make this an annual decentralized not-for-profit celebration of his life and the LED artwork his discovery has inspired.

Please raise a glass to Nakamura-san this evening… and save the date next year to start a Nakamura Night in your hometown!

TRANSITIONS by MARK C. SLEE AND JOHN PARTS TAYLOR.

Dancing in parasympathetic resonance to the compositions of the Gamelatron, Transitions by Mark C Slee and John Parts Taylor is a site-specific volumetric LED sculpture created for Heron Arts in 2023. Natural cadences and rhythms in motion elicit a sort of digital synesthesia, via the layering of both composed and generative minimalist patterns.

Mark shares “Transitions creates a visual language that enhances the sonic experience of being surrounded by the powerful sound of the Gamelatron. The piece focuses heavily on transients - with each distinct gong strike, a pocket of empty air suddenly becomes a vessel for energy. Synchronous rings and orbs of light float through space, mirroring the emotion of the music as well as its sheer physicality in the room.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Mark Slee’s visual art is built around structured systems of addressable LED lights. Drawing on a background in computer programming, he develops algorithmic patterns inspired both by organic and mathematical processes, employing procedural motion, subtle variation, and evolving shifts in both form and hue. These patterns explore the way our visual perception works, creating a vivid, colorful experience that is pleasing both aesthetically and intellectually- pretty lights that tickle mind and soul. These artworks are powered by a software framework Mark has developed called LX Studio.

John Parts Taylor’s artistic practice is a lifelong pursuit of bridging art and technology, sparked by a transformative journey through the Black Rock Desert in 1998. Surrounded by fellow creative technologists, a passion for cross-disciplinary exploration ignited within him. The captivating light-based sculptures presented at Heron Arts stand as a testament to this dedication, their patterns and motions inspired by nature, aiming to evoke a sense of deep tranquility.

Don’t miss the opportunity to view TRANSITIONS, included in John Parts Taylor’s RESONANCE IN LIGHT, exclusively on view at HERON ARTS through MARCH 27TH .

LUX SANCTUM by JOEJOE MARTIN

Inspired by the wash of interior colors at La Sagrada Familia and the mystique of traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry, the wall-mounted luminaires pulsate to the compositions of the Gamelatron and cover the room in saturated light. Hand-fused glass sheets mounted in custom sconce-like enclosures create the intricate dance of shadow and color in the adjacent lounge.

JoeJoe shares “while spending the last two summers in Europe with a touring art installation, I spent an inordinate amount of time exploring many grand cathedrals which housed expansive stained glass windows. I was constantly fascinated by the dance of shadow and color that spilled across those vast spaces and embraced visitors. Lux Sanctum is a projected light installation that captures this feeling, bathing the walls and floor in highly saturated color that moves in rhythmic harmony with the sounds of the Gamelatron. The complimentary shadows that dance across the wall are inspired by the mystique of traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry.”

GAMELATRON VIAORO by AARON TAYLOR KUFFNER.

Gamelatron Viaoro, the latest work by Aaron Taylor Kuffner, features 44 uniquely tuned gongs and metal phones, starting in the 30 hz range and spanning across 6 pitch registers on 10 free standing sculptures. A Gamelatron is a sound-producing kinetic sculpture presented as site-specific and stand-alone artwork made from bronze and iron instruments. The work honors Indonesia’s thousand-year-old aural tradition of gamelan, retrofitted with mechanical mallets on sculptural mounts. A physical computing system transcribes original compositions by the artist into an array of networked electrical pulsations that result in an otherworldly musical automation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Aaron Taylor Kuffner is an American-born conceptual artist, based in New York. SPECTRASCAPE by LUMINOUS WAVEFORMS.

Spectrascape, a collaboration between Phil Spitler and Victoria Heilweil, is a parametrically designed wall installation exploring the captivating dynamics in the undulating patterns of waves. The sculpture’s organic curves form an elegant, repeating rhythm that seduces viewers into a meditative flow. Seamlessly combining transparent acrylic and a custom light score choreographed to harmonize the sculpture’s contours with the Gameletron compositions, Spectrascape appears to float and dance in space.

Spitler and Heilweil share “having attended the previous Resonance in Light exhibitions and seeing the high quality, innovative artwork, we were thrilled to be included in the third iteration of this show. It was a new and exciting challenge for us to synchronize the sculpture with the sound of the Gamelatron”.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Luminous Waveforms is the collaborative art practice of Phil Spitler and Victoria Mara Heilweil. Bringing fine art and creative technology together, they produce experiential works of art incorporating innovative technologies in the design, fabrication and aesthetics.
