🎄 Celebrating the season with our Chinese Hospital & CCHP team

As we come together this holiday season, we extend our sincere appreciation to our physicians, staff, and Board for your continued support and dedication to our mission of serving the community. Your compassion, professionalism, and commitment enable us to provide high-quality, culturally and linguistically appropriate care that meets the unique needs of the communities we serve.

Fulfilling this mission requires teamwork, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. Through your collective efforts, Chinese Hospital and CCHP continue to deliver patient-centered, community-based care, grounded in quality, trust, and accessibility.

This year, we also celebrated important milestones together. We were honored that Newsweek named Chinese Hospital one of America’s Best-in-State Hospitals for the third year, a recognition that reflects the dedication and collaboration demonstrated across our organization every day.

This gathering was a moment to pause, connect, and say thank you. We are proud to work alongside you and grateful for the care, integrity, and commitment you bring to our mission throughout the year.

Chinese Hospital proudly congratulates our Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Jian Zhang, on being invited to deliver the Commencement Address for the University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions Class of 2025. The ceremony was held on December 12 at St. Ignatius Church on the USF campus.

A respected healthcare leader and longtime advocate for community-based care, Dr. Zhang returned to her alma mater as a commencement speaker, marking a meaningful full-circle moment in her professional journey. She earned her Executive Leadership Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from USF in 2012 and credits the university’s Jesuit values with shaping her approach to leadership, service, and lifelong learning.

In her address, Dr. Zhang shared personal reflections and leadership lessons shaped by her decades-long career as a nurse, healthcare executive, and community leader. She encouraged graduates to look for opportunity during moments of uncertainty, drawing from her own early career experiences to show how challenges can become turning points. Reflecting on her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, she spoke about the importance of embracing change with courage and innovation rather than resisting it. Dr. Zhang also emphasized that true leadership is measured not by individual achievement, but by the ability to lift others and help entire communities rise together. Her message highlighted resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to service.

Dr. Zhang also highlighted her experience leading Chinese Hospital through some of the most challenging moments in its 126-year history, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Serving one of San Francisco’s most vulnerable populations, Chinese Hospital demonstrated the power of culturally responsive care, early preparedness, and strong community partnerships. These efforts helped protect Chinatown residents and reinforced Chinese Hospital’s longstanding mission to provide compassionate, accessible care to all, regardless of background or circumstance.

Addressing graduates entering an era of rapid technological advancement in healthcare, Dr. Zhang reminded them that innovation must never come at the expense of humanity. She encouraged the Class of 2025 to lead with both clinical excellence and empathy, carrying forward the Jesuit tradition of caring for the whole person and serving the greater good.

“Your diploma is not the end of your education; it is the beginning of your influence,” Dr. Zhang told graduates, urging them to use their skills to heal, to lead with integrity, and to lift others as they advance in their careers.

As CEO of Chinese Hospital, Dr. Zhang champions quality, equity, and culturally responsive healthcare while developing future leaders to serve diverse and underserved communities. Her commencement address reflected Chinese Hospital’s mission of compassion, resilience, and service to the community.

Chinese Hospital congratulates the University of San Francisco School of Nursing and Health Professions Class of 2025 and wishes the graduates continued success as they begin their careers in service to patients, families, and communities.

With deep sadness, Chinese Hospital mourns the passing of our lifelong friend, devoted physician, and visionary leader, Dr. Collin P. Quock. A proud San Francisco native, Dr. Quock’s extraordinary connection to Chinese Hospital began at birth and continued through decades of service that profoundly shaped our institution and the communities we serve.

Dr. Quock returned to Chinese Hospital in 1971 as an internist and cardiologist, where he founded the Cardiopulmonary Unit, revised resuscitation protocols, and initiated critical care nurse training. His leadership laid the foundation for the hospital’s Intensive and Coronary Care Unit, strengthening clinical excellence, expanding services, and supporting the hospital’s long-term sustainability.

Deeply committed to culturally responsive care, Dr. Quock recognized early on that traditional Western health education often did not meet the needs of Chinese patients. He championed heart-health education tailored to Chinese culture and became the first cardiologist to introduce Chinese-language CPR training in San Francisco’s Chinese community—efforts that bridged critical gaps in care, empowered families, and saved lives.

A leader in medical education and community health, Dr. Quock launched the Annual Chinese Hospital Lecture and Award, which later grew into national and international medical conferences focused on the health of Chinese communities. During his tenure as Chief of Staff, he strengthened pathology and radiology services and established a vital standalone dialysis center, expanding access to life-saving care.

Beyond Chinese Hospital, Dr. Quock served as a UCSF clinical professor for 37 years, mentoring generations of physicians and advancing community-based cardiac care. In recognition of his enduring impact, Chinese Hospital was honored to present him with the Outstanding Physician Leadership Award in 2024.

Dr. Quock’s compassion, vision, and unwavering commitment to service will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. His legacy will forever remain part of Chinese Hospital’s history and continue to inspire our mission for generations to come.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has presented a Certificate of Honor to Dr. Jian Zhang, Chief Executive Officer of Chinese Hospital, in recognition of her extraordinary 32 years of service and her profound impact on community health across San Francisco yesterday. The City also officially declared December 2 as “Dr. Jian Zhang Day” to commemorate her enduring contributions.

Dr. Zhang is retiring after more than three decades of service, during which she expanded access to care, strengthened health equity, and transformed Chinese Hospital into a nationally recognized model for community-based healthcare. Beginning her career as a frontline clinician and rising through multiple leadership roles before becoming Chief Executive Officer in 2017, she has remained a steadfast advocate for culturally competent, bilingual, and accessible services for Chinatown and the broader Asian American community.

“Dr. Jian Zhang has dedicated over 3 decades of her career to serving the community with quality care. Her leadership centered around culturally appropriate care for our community has been so integral in keeping Chinatown and San Francisco residents safe and healthy. It is an honor to recognize Dr. Zhang’s contributions at the Board of Supervisors,” said Supervisor Chyanne Chen (D-District 11).

Transformative accomplishments under Dr. Zhang’s leadership:
• Restored Chinese Hospital’s reputation and financial and operational stability after a major system breakup in 2016.
• Led a nationally recognized pandemic response that protected Chinatown and kept infection and death rates among the lowest in the region.
• Built strong partnerships with UCSF Health, the San Francisco Department of Public Health and other health systems.
• Obtained historic government and philanthropic support.
• Elevated Chinese Hospital’s reputation to national prominence, earning recognition on Newsweek’s America’s Best-in-State Hospitals list for three consecutive years: 2024, 2025, and 2026.
• Strategically established outpatient centers and clinics, bringing culturally and linguistically appropriate care to more families in San Francisco and northern San Mateo County.

Dr. Zhang’s impact extends beyond the walls of the hospital. She has been widely recognized as a champion for health equity, culturally sensitive care, and community partnership, ensuring that immigrant and limited-English-proficient patients are not left behind in an increasingly complex healthcare system.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Dr. Zhang. “It has been the privilege of my life to serve this community alongside the dedicated Board, physicians, nurses, and staff at Chinese Hospital. Although I am stepping away from the CEO role, my commitment to Chinese Hospital’s mission remains unwavering.”

“Dr. Zhang has guided Chinese Hospital through times of great change and challenge, always keeping the community at the center,” said Dr. Roger Eng, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “We are grateful for her 32 years of service and proud that the City is honoring her in this meaningful way.”

Dr. Zhang believes that leadership is about people — inspiring, cultivating, and empowering them to turn vision into enduring success. To ensure that this spirit continues to thrive, Chinese Hospital has established “Dr. Jian Zhang Leadership Fund”. This fund is dedicated to cultivating leaders at every level — from our board and hospital management team to physicians and community leaders—strengthening the network of individuals who serve and uplift the community. As Dr. Zhang enters a new chapter, Chinese Hospital will continue to advance the foundation she built—expanding services, elevating quality, and upholding its mission as a community hospital dedicated to providing culturally and linguistically appropriate care to all who rely on us.
