OBGYN, Morgan Mandingo, MD explains the important cervical cancer screening guidelines update from the American Cancer Society. The update endorses self-collection as an accurate alternative to screening in-clinic with the speculum and explicitly lists the Teal Wand as the only FDA-authorized option for at-home screening.

Important news for woman’s health! The American Cancer Society just updated their cervical cancer screening guidelines, and for the first time, self-collection is officially recommended.
What does this mean for you?
✨ At-home is approved: The guidelines recognize FDA-authorized devices (like the Teal Wand!) as an accurate and trusted way to screen.
✨ No compromise: The Teal Wand has 96% clinical sensitivity for detecting precancer - equal to a clinician-collected sample.
✨ New routine: Average-risk screening is now recommended every 3 years for self-collection starting at age 25.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), by the time most women reach age 50, at least 4 out of 5 will have been infected with HPV (Human Papillomavirus) at some point in their lives. HPV is very common. The infection will often clear over time, but a persistant HPV infection could cause cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine is great to help protect against some of the HPV types, but even if you are vaccinated, it is important to still screen regularly.

Until 1993, most clinical research excluded women. For decades, the studies that shaped how we diagnose, treat, and prevent disease were conducted primarily on men. The result was healthcare built on incomplete data, one that often overlooked how biology, hormones, and life stages affect women’s health.

Thirty years later, the gap in women’s health data still shows up in the care we receive. • About 1 in 4 women in the United States are not up to date on cervical cancer screening.
• More than 95 percent of cervical cancer cases are caused by high-risk variants of human papillomavirus (HPV).
• When high-risk HPV is identified early and treated or monitored appropriately, cervical cancer can be almost completely prevented.
