This Friday at noon I’m facilitating a training “In Session with Self-Harming & Suicidal Trans Youth” via Marin CAMFT, 2 CEs available.

Uncomfortable with self harming and suicidal clients? Unclear on why trans youth have higher self harming and suicidal behaviors than their cisgender peers? This introductory training will help you develop a level of comfort working with self harming and suicidal clients with an emphasis on trans youth. We’ll explore vocabulary specific to trans populations, how minority stress impacts trans youth and how that can show up in session. Learn about the person centered model of self injury recovery and how to integrate narrative expressive arts interventions into sessions to support developing self identity and resilience. Develop skills to distinguish when to safety plan clients and when to refer them to an Emergency Department for 5585/5150 assessment.

While I’m recovering from knee surgery(3rd one in a year) people ask me how I am managing the stress and being stuck at home; video games is how I am dealing with the struggles of healing and having limited mobility. Currently I’m playing where I can swim, climb, and run around cool islands. Video games can be great coping skills, being mindful and thoughtful about what games and in what ways you’ll play them is how they become coping skills. Not every video game is going to work as a coping skill, talk to your therapist about what games could function as a coping skill in your life.

This morning I had the pleasure of presenting about Supporting Trans Youth for UCSF’s to adults that work with youth. We covered vocabulary related to trans youth, issues facing trans youth, and ways to support and include trans youth.

Conferences are great places to make new friends, so grateful I sat down at the same table as and got to learn about the great work she is doing building a comprehensive s*x ed curriculum in Florida. I met so many people doing amazing work with youth at conference.

One question that I didn’t have great answers for was what terms are young people using to talk about sui-cide? I know unaliving and sewerslide, feel free to share other slang terms in the comments.

I had the joy of going to my homestate to attend a conference on the population that I specialize in. UofM’s Adolescent Health Initiative Conference was engaging, informative, and refreshing. I got to hear from amazing professionals and adolescents about new approaches and emerging new practices on the field.

May is Mental Health Awareness month and it’s important to know that the troubled teen industry does not provide actual mental health services and often causes significant harm to youth in their facilities. Learn more at unsilenced.org or the link in my bio.
The troubled teen industry is not mental health treatment. Wilderness camps are not mental health treatment. Mental health treatment requires informed consent, autonomy, compassion, and a therapeutic alliance. Troubled Teen programs focus on abducting kids in the middle of the night, control, submission, and disempowerment.
