Kat Chen, LCSW

Kat Chen, LCSW Psychotherapy for adults, teens and children in California. Drop me a line at katchenlcsw@gmail.com! I am a person of color and consider myself an LGBTQ ally.

Telework currently; for the past 7 years, I've created this practice to support people struggling with finding their "people" or "footing." There can be any number of life factors pushing or pulling you into investigating therapy right now. Maybe you feel there is too much movement (the chaos, feelings of being overwhelmed) or perhaps you feel that you are stuck in a rut and going through the same patterns in life, work or relationships and need to make a change. First and foremost, my goal is to work myself out of the job. That may sound odd, but I envision therapy as a time for problem solving and grounding and growing. You already possess many strengths and life skills, likely more than you realize, and I see my job as helping you discover and start using these skills more effectively to have positive impacts on your life. In a more succinct and cliche'd analogy, I want to help you to find your wings and fly away (in a healthy and balanced manner). In our client-centered and resilience based work, we will be working within a non-judgmental and supportive space to dig through some past and make paths to a better future. It might not always be pretty or comfortable, but I believe that you have the power within yourself already. I want to work with you and help you discover your strengths and recognize your accomplishments; from here, you are going to find your better and best selves. I recognize that people arrive to the San Francisco Bay Area with different expectations and perspectives; I respect and celebrate people for their individuality and self-expression. Regardless of how you have come to be here and your experiences, you will feel safe and heard in this space we have together. Congratulations on taking this first step, making this first pass at sketching out what you envision for the future. You are here and making those first moves to make change, your change, happen. Let's begin.

Are you a sunrise or a sunset kind of person? Some say the sunrise gives inspiration and hope for the day while the sunset could be a reminder that the day is done and opportunity is over. But if we could *just* flip it, the sunset could be a reward for a day well lived. Just a little something to mull over

You’ve heard it before but gentle reminder that movement is medicine, breath is medicine. My current favorite is breathing in for 4 and letting it out for 8. Simple and might do the trick for those hairy holiday moments/let’s take a beat

Innocent looking enough, free bath products in a hotel bathroom…but these toiletries perpetuate the idea that there even IS a normal. In the media and beauty industry, this leads to body images, self-esteem, self worth, chasing the dream/ideal issues. Not to mention a slough of terrible products, TV shows and spin offs. I’m here to tell you that YOU ARE PERFECT the WAY YOU ARE. I’ll shout it from the roof tops with you

Learned today that yam skins can’t be eaten by dogs which led me down a rabbit hole of wondering whether the yam had developed it as a defense mechanism way back in the day (I majored in Evolution and Ecology at UC Davis (go, Ags!), and you can see where that has led me…).

People can develop a defense mechanism to help them survive traumas/life.

At the point it doesn’t serve you any longer, is the time to start the work in dismantling it. Let’s get to work

Taking time and space for yourself may ruffle others in the short game, but the long game benefits are endless! You owe it to yourself to do the work and take care of yourself— whether you’re infrastructure or a human!
