Formaldehyde has been linked to cancer for nearly 50 years. It’s still in 50% of all beauty products marketed to Black Angelenos.

Despite knowing of the dangers that surround formaldehyde for decades, the FDA has yet to act—while formaldehyde is already banned in the European Union and Japan.

RFK Jr. has the power to change this. Join our letter campaign to demand he take action!

Beauty products marketed to Black women are some of the most toxic on the market, increasing our risk of breast and uterine cancer, infertility, and birth defects.

Black women spend 9x more on hair care products than any other demographic, but these products often contain formaldehyde (a known human carcinogen) and other toxic chemicals!

Black beauty deserves better choices.

In the same week that Bayer, the company that makes the w**d killer Roundup, proposed a seven billion dollar settlement to cancer patients — because it was clear enough that their product was linked to this disease — the Trump administration just announced an effort to boost the production of glyphosate.

Glyphosate is the main chemical in Roundup, and the very one that is causing cancer.

This just shows that the government is not using science to protect our health from toxic chemicals in the environment.

That’s why we need organizations like BCPP to fight for regulation to protect us all.

☕ Your tea might be serving you billions of plastic particles with every cup!

New research found that common teabags made from nylon, polypropylene, and even cellulose release HUGE amounts of tiny plastic particles when you steep them in hot water - we’re talking up to 1.2 BILLION nanoparticles per milliliter! 😱

Scientists tested what happens when these particles meet human gut cells and found they’re definitely getting absorbed. Different types of plastics were taken up by different types of intestinal cells, showing our bodies are interacting with these materials in ways we don’t fully understand yet.

This isn’t just about ocean plastic - it’s in our kitchen, in our tea, and in our bodies. The health effects? Still being studied, but this is a wake-up call that everyday products we consider safe might be exposing us to much more plastic than we thought.

🌿 It’s time to switch to loose leaf tea—there’s a wide variety of tea leaf sieves to choose from—until companies prove their teabags are plastic free.

Consumer Reports Advocacy’s recent article on toxic chemicals hiding in everyday cosmetics reinforces what we've been saying for years.

From phthalates in fragranced products to PFAS in "long-lasting" makeup, formaldehyde-releasers in hair straighteners to parabens in lotions, too many beauty products contain harmful ingredients linked to breast cancer, reproductive harm, and hormone disruption.

✨ Swipe to see how to identify and avoid 5 of the most concerning chemicals and 5 tips to shop safer.

Women of color face disproportionate exposure to these toxic chemicals through products explicitly marketed to them. This isn't just about ingredients—it's about beauty justice.

We've been fighting for safer cosmetics for years through our Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. While we wait for stronger federal regulations, you can protect yourself by voting with your wallet and demanding better from brands.

Phthalates, common chemicals used in plastics, personal care products, food packaging, and much more may drive breast cancer—now the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 20-39, according to a study from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

❌ The research suggests that phthalates interfere with the body’s hormone systems, activate cancer-promoting genes, and make tumors both easier to form and harder to treat.

❌ The review also points out that while EuropeanCommission has restricted several phthalates from all uses, the U.S. has only banned a handful and still allows phthalates in most food packaging and personal care products.

🏛 Luckily, there is action to take! Building on the success of BCPP’s historic California Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (AB 2762), we’re pushing for passage of the Safer Beauty Bill Package, a federal legislative package aimed at making personal care products safer for everyone, especially women of color and professional salon workers.

Researchers from UCSF and the University of Sydney assessed studies of the health effects of microplastics on human digestion, respiration, and reproduction. Their findings identify microplastic as a suspected hazard that may interfere with human biological processes.

🫁 Evidence was found linking microplastic to changes in animal intestines, possible lung tissue damage, and breathing impairment.

Furthermore, evidence of chronic inflammation, immune suppression, & oxidative stress in the colon and lungs from microplastic suggests it could contribute to cancerous malignancies in these organs.

🤰 In regard to reproduction, and based on previous work with animals, researchers also suspect that microplastics disrupt reproductive hormones, ovulation, and s***m count.

Not only that, but early studies suggest microplastic may pose risks to the placenta, maternal health, and health of the child.

🔬An unrelated and recently published study of cancer patients in Algeria found high concentrations of microplastics in breast cancer tissues (and colon and re**al tissues).

⚠️ Although UCSF and University of Sydney researchers are quick to note that more study is needed, they emphasize practicing precaution in the meantime because plastic is ubiquitous in contemporary life, and exposure to it is constant.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate a win!

In 2020, co-sponsored Senate Bill 1044 to ban the manufacture, sale, and use of firefighting foam that contains PFAS, otherwise known as forever chemicals. Click 🔗 in bio to read the press release.

This was a big step toward better protecting our firefighters, who experience higher rates of cancer than the general population due, in part, to exposure to PFAS in gear, firefighting foam, dust, and smoke on the job. This is especially true for female firefighters.

Then, in May 2024, San Francisco passed an ordinance to ban PFAS in firefighter uniforms, too! San Francisco is now the largest city in the country to equip firefighters with new gear free of forever chemicals. BCPP is proud to have contributed to the momentum toward this success and to a safer reality for SF firefighters.
