Following the recent federal ruling on vaccine policy, new details make the impact even clearer. The court has temporarily blocked every major vaccine policy change made since June 2025, restoring the childhood vaccine schedule to its evidence-based standard.
This includes overturning the recommendation against the hepatitis B birth dose—a critical protection given within 24 hours of life.
Why this matters: The birth dose is a safety net. Even when screening or access to care isn’t perfect, it prevents newborns from developing chronic hepatitis B—a lifelong infection that can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
The ruling also emphasized something bigger: vaccine decisions must follow a rigorous, science-based process.
The court found that recent policy changes bypassed long-established systems designed to protect public health.
For families and communities, this means:
• Routine childhood vaccines remain the standard of care
• Insurance coverage tied to these recommendations stays in place
• Clinicians can continue following evidence-based guidance with confidence

This moment is a reminder that policies matter, science matters, and access matters.

A federal judge has halted proposed changes to U.S. vaccine policy after concerns that long-standing scientific review processes were not properly followed. Among these changes were recommendations that could have limited universal access to the hepatitis B birth dose—one of the most critical tools we have to prevent lifelong infection.

For the hepatitis B community, this decision is incredibly important. The birth dose vaccine—given within 24 hours of life—acts as a safety net, protecting infants from perinatal and early childhood transmission. Without it, babies who are unknowingly exposed can develop chronic hepatitis B, significantly increasing their risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer later in life.

This ruling reinforces the importance of evidence-based, equitable public health policy. Hepatitis B is preventable as long as access to vaccination remains strong, consistent, and guided by science!

Recent data show that Hepatitis B shots given to U.S. newborns have fallen by around 10 percentage points over the past two years, dropping from roughly 83.5% in 2023 to just over 73% in 2025 — leaving 1 in 4 babies without early protection.

This decline is especially concerning in light of the new birth-dose guidance changes. The hepatitis B birth dose is critical because it provides immediate protection at a time when infants are most vulnerable. Babies who contract hepatitis B at birth or in early infancy have up to a 90% risk of developing chronic infection, which can lead to lifelong liver disease and liver cancer.

The hep b vaccine is a safe, and highly effective tool to prevent transmission from mother to child and through early horizontal exposure. Delaying protection increases risk. Protecting newborns from day one matters.

02/20/2026

Recent reporting has highlighted concerns about a U.S.-funded hepatitis B vaccine study in Guinea-Bissau. According to STAT, the trial would randomize whether approximately 14,500 newborns receive a hepatitis B vaccine dose at birth or at two months of age.

This has raised many questions because the hepatitis B birth dose is a proven, life-saving intervention. When babies are infected at birth, up to 90% develop chronic hepatitis B, putting them at long-term risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer. Receiving the vaccine within 24 hours of birth dramatically reduces that risk by preventing transmission during delivery and early infancy, even if the mother tests negative.

Delaying protection in high-prevalence settings can leave newborns vulnerable during a critical window. Learn more here: https://www.hepmag.com/article/usfunded-hepatitis-b-vaccine-trial-continues-draw-criticism
