Denim Day is this Wednesday, April 29. đź’™

Denim Day is a global movement, with millions of people wearing jeans to raise awareness and push back against victim-blaming. When you show up, you’re helping build a culture rooted in support, accountability, and care.

The movement began in 1992, when Italy’s Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction, arguing that because the victim wore tight jeans, she must have consented. In response, women in the Italian Parliament wore denim to work—challenging harmful myths and sparking a global movement.

We’ll be resharing posts throughout the day to uplift our community and stand together for survivors.

Let’s show up—visibly and collectively.

38% of domestic violence survivors experience homelessness at some point in their lives. And 90% of women experiencing homelessness have survived severe physical or sexual violence. *

These aren’t just statistics—they reflect the reality too many women are forced to navigate.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we’re reminded that advocacy isn’t optional—it’s urgent. Safe housing isn’t just a service; it’s a lifeline for survivors navigating systems that weren’t built with them in mind.

At Community Forward, we’re working to expand housing for women and survivors, deepen trauma-informed care, and ensure every woman has the support she needs to heal and thrive.

We were honored to join the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence for their Bay Area Regional Retreat—bringing together organizations united in addressing the real challenges domestic violence survivors face across our communities.

This gathering took place at Tony’s Closet, a special space at CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse), where clients and their children can access free, new household goods as they transition from safe housing into their next chapter.

Named in memory of a beloved staff member, Tony’s Closet represents more than just material support—it embodies safety, dignity, and the feeling of home. 🤍Thank you, CORA, for providing a wonderful space for our retreat.

đź’ˇ Understanding the Work: Trauma-Informed Care đź’ˇ

We’re sharing key concepts that shape how we support women experiencing homelessness and trauma. Because the language we use matters—and shapes how we care for our community.

Trauma-Informed Care is an approach that recognizes the impact of trauma and prioritizes safety, trust, and empowerment in every interaction.

Why it matters: Many women experiencing homelessness are also survivors of trauma. Without the right support, traditional services can unintentionally re-traumatize instead of help. At Community Forward SF, this looks like a 24/7 Drop-In Center for women, mental health support, and care that center's each person's dignity.

Healing starts with feeling safe—and together, we can build a community where every woman is supported with compassion and respect. Donate today: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/community-awareness-and-treatment-services

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) — a movement rooted in decades of advocacy, from the civil rights era to the founding of the first r**e crisis centers.

This year’s theme, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward,” honors that history while reaffirming the work ahead. It reminds us that progress is possible when communities come together to raise awareness and drive prevention.

Awareness and prevention go hand in hand. Education, consent, and community accountability are key to building safer futures.

Today is . Community Forward honors the strength, resilience, and leadership of trans and gender-expansive people—especially those we serve who are impacted by homelessness and violence.

In San Francisco, transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people are 18 times more likely to experience homelessness than the general population—a stark reminder of the inequities that persist.

At a time when trans lives are too often impacted by harmful policies and systems, our commitment is clear: we stand in solidarity. We are committed to creating spaces where trans people are safe, affirmed, and heard—not just today, but every day.

Visibility matters. Protection matters. Community matters.

We were honored to attend Raising our Voice: Rising in Power at San Francisco City Hall. Thank you to Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Myrna Melgar, Supervisor Connie Chan, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, the Human Rights Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Department on the Status of Women for hosting an inspiring Women's History Month celebration.

The event recognized remarkable leaders whose work strengthens the well-being of women, girls, and gender-expansive people across San Francisco. We are grateful to join in uplifting Dr. Nicole Barnett, LaVerda Allen, Olga Talamante, and more leaders who are driving efforts in advancing gender equity in our community.
