December 20th marks the 6th birthday of the United States’ youngest military branch.

The United States Space Force is a separate and distinct branch of the armed services, organized under the Department of the Air Force in a manner very similar to how the Marine Corps is organized under the Department of the Navy. Its Mission: to organize, train, and equip Guardians to conduct global space operations that enhance the way U.S. joint and coalition forces fight, while also offering decision makers military options to achieve national objectives.

NCIRE wishes the U.S. Space Force a Happy 6th Birthday and thanks its service members for protecting us “Always Above”!

On December 13th we celebrate the 389th birthday of the U.S. National Guard. On this date in 1636, the first militia regiments in North America organized in Massachusetts. Based upon an order of the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s General Court, the colony’s militia was organized into three permanent regiments to defend the colony better. Today, the descendants of these first regiments – the 181st Infantry, the 182nd Infantry, the 101st Field Artillery, and the 101st Engineer Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard – share the distinction of being the oldest units in the U.S. military. NCIRE celebrates the National Guard and its long history.

Dr. Renuka Nayak presents research at American College of Rheumatology conference

Dr. Renuka Nayak had the honor of presenting her research during the annual American College of Rheumatology (ACR) conference “ACR Convergence 2025”, October 24-29 in Chicago, Illinois.

In the October 26th session, titled, “Immune-Metabolite Axis: How Microbial and Host Byproducts Drive Inflammation”, Dr. Nayak discussed therapeutic approaches to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using short-chain fatty acids (SCFA).

Along with her colleagues Dr. Nayak’s research on identical twins who are discordant for RA found that the twin with RA had significantly lower concentrations of f***l butyrate and propionate. SCFA-producing bacteria were also decreased in the RA twin. This suggests that low levels of SCFAs may contribute to the development or progression of RA.

Dementia significantly impacts rural communities in the U.S., presenting unique challenges for family caregivers due to limited access to essential support services.

Dr. Kenneth Covinsky co-published a study that examines the influence of area-level factors on the utilization of home- and community-based services among rural caregivers.

The study, titled "Utilization of home- and community-based services among rural family caregivers of persons with dementia: the role of the area deprivation index”, was published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.

The Northern California Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (NCIRE) was established in 1988 following Congress passing Public Law 100-322 (now codified at section 7361-66 of title 38, United States Code) that allowed Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers to establish Nonprofit research corporations (NPCs) to provide flexible funding mechanisms to administer non-VA research funds, forming a unique public/private partnership that dramatically broadened VA’s ability to benefit from private and non-VA public support for research conducted at VA medical centers.

For the past 37 years, NCIRE has grown from a small 4-person team into a bustling 31-person administrative core staff with 215 employees in research labs and offices within the San Francisco VA campus lead by Rebecca Rosales, MBA, CRA, Chief Executive Officer. NCIRE is the largest of the 79 Nonprofit research institutes associated with the Department of Veterans Affairs nationwide and plays a crucial role in supporting nearly 200 SFVAHCS researchers as they endeavor to improve the understanding and management of disorders affecting our Veterans.

Please join us in celebrating 37 years serving Veterans and the global community through research advancement!

Each year on December 7th, Veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. An additional 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft.

On Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, NCIRE honors the Veterans and civilians who lost their lives in an attack that changed the course of history.

Come and read the latest issue of the NCIRE Details News Awards (DNA) Newsletter: Volume 29 Winter 2025!

Thank you to the contributors, Kelly Wentworth, MD, who shares her research focusing on a rare bone disease – fibrous dysplasia (FD). Her goal is to identify potential therapeutic targets not only for this disease, but also for common diseases of impaired bone growth, including osteoporosis and delayed fracture healing. In addition, Xuhui Liu, MD shares his research in orthopedic surgery specifically on muscle biology. It has a critical role: poor muscle regeneration can limit recovery and increase the risk of re-injury.

When Missing Out Matters: Associations Between Social Activity Restriction and Caregiver Burden

Social engagement is crucial for well-being, yet caregivers often face restrictions due to care responsibilities. The caregiver-specific consequences of these restrictions are underexplored.

Drs. Kenneth Covinsky and Alexander K. Smith explore the social impact and burdens on caregivers in the study titled “When Missing Out Matters: Associations Between Social Activity Restriction and Caregiver Burden”, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
