February is American Heart Health Month, a time when all people are encouraged to focus on their cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans, and the leading cause of hospitalization in the VA health care system. It is also a major cause of disability.

Heart Health Month also includes:
• Heart Failure Awareness Week (U.S.), February 8th-14th, especially focuses on the heart health of our elderly and Veteran population.
• National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, February 22nd, raises awareness about heart valve disease — its risk factors, symptoms, detection, and treatment — to reduce the burden of the disease.

NCIRE supports cardiovascular research Investigators: Drs. Jorge Kizer, Joseph Yang, Kendrick Shunk, Paul Simpson, John Teerlink, Neal Yuan, and Kendrick Shunk and Jeffrey Zimmet, whose research continues to set the pace for cardiovascular health care.

Rebecca Sudore Publishes Advance Care Planning Trial in Annals of Internal Medicine

Advance care planning (ACP) can improve communication of patients' preferences in their care but is often underutilized in health systems.

Rebecca Sudore, MD, and colleagues conducted a trial across 50 clinics in 3 University of California health systems to compare approaches in increasing the use of ACP for seriously ill patients.

The trial, titled “Interventions to Improve Advance Care Planning Documentation in the Electronic Health Record”, was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause blindness.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness for Veterans over 60. But blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented with early detection and treatment. This makes January a perfect time to remind all Veterans to act now to prevent this disease.

During National Glaucoma Awareness Month, in January, NCIRE reminds everyone to prioritize regular eye exams and show support for those suffering from the disease. NCIRE is proud to support the ophthalmology research of Dr. Frank Brodie.

In January, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, NCIRE joins the endeavor to increase public knowledge of cervical health and the importance of getting regular screenings. In 2025, the American Cancer Society estimated 13,360 to 13,820 new cases of invasive cervical cancer, with about 4,000 to 4,360 deaths, primarily preventable through HPV vaccination and regular screenings like Pap tests. Depending on age and current health, screening is recommended every three or five years. Have a discussion with your health care provider to determine a recommended screening schedule.

Let’s start the new year with the gift of life!

Blood donations often decrease in the winter months with inclement weather conditions, and that increases the demand for donations of blood and platelets. Blood donation is safer than ever before and saves lives. The American Red Cross and Blood Banks of America encourage everyone who can donate to continue their donations. For those who have never donated, you can check your eligibility to donate and make an appointment through the American Red Cross website at https://www.redcrossblood.org/

This National Blood Donor Month, NCIRE encourages all who are eligible to donate blood, not only this month but throughout the year.

Prevalence of Exposures and Moral Injury in First Responders

Workers in high-stakes occupations, such as first responders, are at risk of exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and moral injury, yet research with first responders has been scarce.

Dr. Shira Maguen’s study, titled “Prevalence of Exposures and Moral Injury in First Responders” aimed to assess the frequency of exposure to PMIEs, the prevalence of moral injury, and the correlation between moral injury and other mental health symptoms.

The study was published in the Journal of the American College or Emergency Physicians Open and can be read here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12547314/
