Ward 86, the first dedicated HIV clinic in the United States, recently marked its 40th anniversary with a celebration at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Since its inception, Ward 86 has been a key element of the "San Francisco model" of comprehensive community-based HIV care. Over the years, the clinic has pioneered innovations in HIV treatment and prevention that have been adopted nationwide and around the world.

"Treatment has dramatically changed the lives of our patients. But let me tell you what has not changed. Number one, [Ward 86] is patient-centered. And secondly, we are constantly figuring out better ways to deliver scientific advances in HIV to our patients," said Dr. Diane Havlir, SFGH's chief of HIV, infectious diseases, and global medicine. "Ward 86 is the Silicon Valley of innovation for AIDS care, and what we do here is transferred both locally and globally."

The Indigenous HART Program
IHART2 is the second iteration of the Indigenous HIV/AIDS Research Training (IHART) program. IHART2 is an innovative research training program for Indigenous, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI) and other underrepresented ethnic minority scholars. The IHART2 program aims to develop a network of scholars dedicated to culturally grounded research that will contribute to ameliorating health disparities among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and the historically underserved HIV/AIDS population of NHPI .

HIV unmuted: Why is public health unfair? The story of monkeypox, COVID-19 & HIV

The development of COVID-19 vaccines has allowed some people to return to “normal life”. But even now, not everyone can access these vaccines, particularly people living in low-income countries.

Unequal access to healthcare is a sadly familiar story for people living with HIV. From 1997 to 2006, an estimated 12 million people on the continent of Africa died because HIV treatment was too expensive.

In this episode of HIV unmuted, the award-winning IAS podcast, we will discuss why these parallels in unfair healthcare access are showing up time and time again, look ahead to the recent monkeypox outbreak, and assess whether we have learnt the critical lessons from COVID-19 and HIV.
