The Bay Area is dealing with some historically terrible air quality right now. Here are some tips on how to help your lungs deal with the poor air quality:
Try not to exercise/exert yourself outside.
If you must be outdoors, wear an N95 mask.
Keep your windows and doors closed when possible!
Use an air purifier indoors.
Use a neti pot, or other form of nasal irrigation, to clean your nose and sinuses.
Drink lots of water! Stay hydrated! Your lungs (and whole body) need lots of water to move toxins out of your body
Increase your intake of sulfur-rich foods like garlic, onion, and the cruciferous vegetables (kale, broccoli, cabbage etc.) This helps recycle glutathione, an important substance in detoxing your body.
Supplements:
N-Acetylcysteine and Quercetin both help repair oxidative damage from smoke and airborne pollutants
Stinging Nettles act as an expectorant to help move phlegm out of your lungs
Bromelain is a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps prevent airway restriction
(A great combination product is Natural D-Hist by Ortho Molecular Products)
Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant, helpful for preventing lung injury
Chinese herbs like Bi Yan Pian or Cang Er San help with congestion and mucus
Cordyceps and Reishi mushroom both support proper immune responses and help your body respond to stress.
Get acupuncture/cupping/gua sha to clear out inflammation, move out phlegm and improve circulation!
Be there for each other! My heart goes out to everyone affected by these fires, I hope you and your loved ones are all safe! Reach out with any questions you may have!
