21DSD community update

An open letter to The 21-Day Sugar Detox community.
__

More than ten years ago, I created the 21-Day Sugar Detox (21DSD) with the goal of helping people curb their sugar cravings and live healthier, happier lives.

It was a program that I needed, and that I know many of you needed, too, and I am proud of what I created and the community that you all have created around it. I’m proud of your nutritional shifts and accomplishments that followed that reached far beyond just what was on your plate.
--
What started as an ebook transformed into three published books and a huge community of participants, coaches, alumni, and advocates for the program.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been touched by this program through our books, social channels, and active online community groups, which is certainly mind-blowing and humbling.

I am truly grateful for each and every one of you who supported the 21DSD over the years.
--
Recently, I have had it on my heart to shift the focus of my work, and with that shift, I’ve decided to end social media and online community support from my team for The 21-Day Sugar Detox program for a number of reasons.

First, my thoughts and attitudes towards the way we all talk about what we’re eating have shifted. I no longer want to directly support diet culture through actively posting about or leading challenges in the way that I once did. When I say “I,” in this case, I do also mean my team, Team Balanced Bites, as they have primarily been responsible for the ongoing online support.
--
Second, in focusing on core values that I hold, I’ve recognized that I look up to and value the thoughts and opinions of people based on concepts far outside of their fitness level or nutrition interests, and want to model this behavior as well. While I will absolutely always love food, cooking, and teaching about how to make delicious and nourishing meals, I don’t want the focus of my work to be a “detox” program.
--
Lastly, my team’s time and attention are valuable, and I want them to feel fully aligned in their work as well as with where my vision as their leader is taking us. I also highly value work-life balance both for myself and for my team. I don’t want anyone to feel anxious or stressed by the need to divide their attention. My vision is taking Balanced Bites as a food company into new territory, and to feel cohesive and like we’re all working together for a common goal, I want everyone who is working with me to have their attention focused on the same things.
--
What does this mean for you?

The 21-Day Sugar Detox books and website will still be available as resources, but the social media channels will no longer be active / supported, we’ll be ending our weekly email newsletter, and we will not run any “official” monthly groups. We will also be closing our 21DSD Facebook Community Group. All of these changes will happen effective March 1, 2021.
--
You are welcome to form support groups on your own and use the books and online materials in any ways you find helpful.

You are also welcome to find a coach through our website 21DSD.com/coaches to connect with them to form groups or find support if you’d like.
--
As the 21DSD winds down, my team and I are focusing our time and energy on growing Balanced Bites and helping people gain access to healthy food options including our spices, meals, snacks, and nutrition resources through the online shop, San Francisco store, and social media channels.
--
If you’re interested in following along our journey, you’re welcome to join the email newsletter where we share cooking tricks, health tips, recipes, and more.

Thank you for being here, and I look forward to serving you as part of the Balanced Bites community!

xo,
Diane

𝗥𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗰, 𝗚𝗵𝗲𝗲, & 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘁𝘀⁣

PREP TIME: 15 mi⁣ns
COOK TIME: varies, 60-90 minutes⁣
SERVINGS: 4⁣

Ingredients:⁣

- 5 tablespoons ghee⁣
- 10-12 cloves of garlic, minced ⁣
- 1 tablespoon SAVORY blend (or use 1 teaspoon each of sea salt, black pepper & dried rosemary or oregano)⁣
- 8 large carrots, sliced into sticks⁣
- 1 whole chicken⁣
- 1 lemon, quartered⁣

Preheat the oven to 375F.⁣

In a small bowl, combine the ghee and garlic with the spice blend. Place the carrot sticks into a large roasting pan and toss to combine with 2 tablespoons of the ghee mixture.⁣

Place a roasting rack inside the pan and place the chicken onto the rack and place 2-3 of the lemon quarters inside the cavity of the chicken.⁣

Brush the chicken with the remaining ghee mixture to coat it evenly. If necessary, tie the chicken drumsticks together with string. Squeeze the remaining lemon over the chicken and carrots.⁣

Roast for 60 minutes (15-20 minutes per pound) or until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165 degrees F when inserted into a meaty part of the leg, avoiding the bone. Let the chicken rest on a cutting board for at least 10 minutes before serving. Remove the roasting rack from the pan with the vegetables.⁣

While the chicken rests, place the vegetables back into the oven to continue to roast and caramelize for an additional 10 minutes or more to your preference, giving them a stir to ensure they're evenly coated with any drippings from the chicken.⁣

Serve the roasted carrots with the chicken.⁣

Gluten Free Southwestern Keto Egg Muffin!

Keto Muffin:✅1 tbsp ghee (butter or other healthy fat)
✅2 tsp coconut flour (sifted recommended)
✅1 egg
✅1/2 tsp. baking powder (aluminum & corn-free, such as )
✅ dash of or Himalayan Salt ✅ whisk ingredients together for n a small bowl
✅ cook in microwave or oven:
For Microwave - pour ingredients safe mug and microwave for 90 seconds.
For Oven baked: bake in oven safe mug at 350 for about 15 -20 min.] ✅ Slice in half and toast (or lightly broil in oven)
🥚
Egg:
✅ Heat pan on medium low
✅ Add small amount of healthy fat ✅ Grease inside rim of stainless steel biscuit cutter that is same size as “Keto Muffin”
✅ Place stainless steel biscuit cutter on heated pan
✅ Wait about 30 sec for it to heat up, meanwhile,
✅ Crack egg into measuring cup (or small container with spout)
✅ Pour egg into stainless steel biscuit cutter (I secured mine down with an oven mitt to keep egg from seeping under
✅ Cook until desired doneness (I attempted runny yolk but it was about 1/2 runny) (Note: while cooking egg - also cook the tomatoes on the same pan - see below)
✅ Remove from pan and loosen from biscuit cutter carefully (I used a knife around inside rim)
✅ Place egg on muffin with a generous slathering of chipotle lime Mayo.

Southwestern Cherry tomatoes:
✅ Slice a small handful of colorful cherry tomatoes
(Note: I also added chopped beet greens)
✅ Add to pan that is cooking egg, sprinkle with Taco & Fajita blend
✅ Add a tablespoon of prepared salsa (I like spicy!)
✅ Sauté while egg is cooking
✅ After egg is done, place on muffin and spoon cooked tomatoes on top!
😋

Have you tried these Salted Peanut Butter Bites from .quick.start yet? The cocoa butter makes for a creamy and dreamy treat 😍

NOTE: The original recipe does include stevia, which isn’t 21DSD-friendly. So simply *leave out* the stevia, and you’ve got a tasty not-sweet treat!

I made the Salted Peanut Butter Bites from the Keto Quickstart book. They are really good. Check them out! Leave out the stevia for a 21-Day Sugar Detox approved treat.

If something is feeling *off* in your workouts, it's time to take a look at your plate. Are you getting enough starchy carbohydrates to fuel your workouts and recover from them?

Remember, this is NOT a low carb program!

Try increasing your intake of starchy carbs, here are a few examples:
- butternut squash
- white or sweet potatoes
- plantains

Add these foods to your pre- and/or post-workout meals to help replenish your body's stored fuel sources (aka glycogen). Then see how you feel. Keep tweaking until you feel your best!
