✨How To Get Things Done!✨+ other 💞Skills for Self-Care + Focus💞

Ok IG Fam… Here’s a little preview of the self-care skills that we work on in skills coaching:

We start with the 💙Triangle of Attention💙- It sounds quite simple…

1) 💜Focus your attention💜 like a flashlight 🔦 on 1 achievable goal at a time …

2) 💛Delay Distraction💛 (keep a to-do list and write down every distracting thought eg *Read later!!) and …

3) 💗Build A Bridge To LT Memory 💗 (ie do it over and over again until it feels like “muscle memory” - Me, I didn’t exercise before but NOW I get crabby if I don’t ! It works :)

Again, it sounds “simple”…. But y hat is NOT the same as “easy.” Coaching helps!! 💎 You can do it!

Next, we have 💙Expanding Your Time Horizon💙… We build this skill over time and combine it with other skills like boosting your body budget and learning your limits. Over time you master the ability to zoom out of the stress that it right in front of you to slowly expand your ability to plan self-care forward into meaningful life goals for the future. THIS is the fun part of 🌈 🌈.

The 3rd skill for and that I’ll preview (of many more!) is 💙Shaping A Goal or Mood through Rituals of Connection 💙… This beautiful skill allows you to shape your habits and routine by embodying the culture you wish to live through the art of ritual. We use skills to help you learn what matters most as you build habits that center those priorities in your life. Say you want more movement in your life, Ok - we pick the pharmacy a little farther from your house and you walk there. We start small and expand to profound, meaningful life goals❣️ This is the really, REALLY fun part of therapy!

Ummm… 🌈 a GREAT time evidently!!! 🌈

As a burnout prevention specialist for helping professionals, I can’t tell you how awesome it felt to receive profound care and attention myself from those who Really Get It.

I also learned so much more than I expected❣️Ask me about a beautiful intro to MesoAmerican Healing, what social work orgs are ethically required to do when it comes to self-care of their own (!), and many fresh perspectives how to care for oneself in the process of caring for others🔥(yes, in these unprecedented times).

I’m so grateful for the new friends I met and this profession most broadly, especially our focus on . We are 750,000 strong after all. Imagine what could happen if we really Move Our Feet. 🤍

✨New certification, Who dis?!✨

It’s me! 💁‍♀️ I’m excited to share that I am now an ADHD-Certified Clinical Provider. I have been quietly working on this training over the last year and applying best practice with clients across hundreds of therapy hours. 🛋️ It has been amazing to see these skills work in real time and watch lives change because of it. 💞

My ADHD certification is a meaningful accomplishment for me personally because I had heard so many myths about ADHD before getting evidence-based training myself. I had even heard family members claim that ADHD is “not a real diagnosis.” This kind of misinformation leads to severe delays in access to care and further stigma. 😔

ADHD is a real diagnosis, for sure, with real implications. The saddest statistic I learned from my training is that folks with ADHD have a shorter life expectancy by ~11-13 years! Su***de, substance abuse, social rejection, and problems in relationships are very common.

📌 Luckily, the greatest predictor of success for folks with ADHD is early access to a diagnosis and the care that comes with it. I am proud that I can be a safe provider for neurodivergent folks to come to for care and understanding. 🌈

SXSW has been a welcome home for me to experiment with new ideas and connect with other creatives. I would love to do it again, this time connecting with other change agents using community models to amplify mental health supports - such as the tiny bakery I just launched as an excuse to hangout / interrupt the chronic loneliness epidemic we’re facing.

🎨 recently put a call out to artists to respond to the epidemic … 💪👕💞… So I fully put my heart on my sleeve and did just that! 🥰🎥😳

✨ Because I role model for a living, it is probably my clients who know best that I hope to be when I grow up… 🤫

( 🌈 without quitting my day job!🌈 )

We talk about joy, meaning and purpose all the time (not to brag) ✨ so we’re both used to it. 🤭

🧑‍🎨 I admit it - I’m proud of myself though this time though💖 because … This is the first time I am applying for a grant ✨as an Artist✨. Keep in mind, I am a trained scientist who grew up in a culture that praised high achievement first. Someone else had to tell me a few times (!) before I could hear them that I AM an artist. 🤷‍♀️

💘I can imagine no greater honor and privilege than to partner artistically with the project and the system as an 🧑‍🎨 Anti-Loneliness Social Artist in Residence 🎨.

Since I am already putting my heart 💖on my sleeve/online… (🫣💌✨)…. I may as well let you eavesdrop on my process as well

Sometimes the personal + professional collide in the most beautiful ways❤️‍🔥and tiny dreams come true!

What?! 🥐You opened a tiny bakery?

Yup! I sure did! 👩‍🍳

Short story goes... I don’t have any formal training - I’m a therapist after all. And yet - I am a Try-Hard who is willing to bake anything twice. I won’t serve it unless it is delicious!

As a burnout prevention therapist, it is my job to teach others how to chase joy (+ overcome trauma) using research-backed skills. Hearing other people bring me their personalized examples of profound joy is what keeps me coming back after all these years. 💖 I wouldn’t know what I’m talking about at all though if I didn’t keep my joy practice alive and well. 🌈 This is it - For sure!

I also care a lot about the chronic loneliness crisis we are facing. We all know on a human level how hard loneliness is on our health and what a risk factor it is for political polarization, and even violence. As a therapist - and as a person - I try to do my teeny tiny part in building easy spaces for intentional hanging out - everything from hack-a-thons, retreats, self-care pop-ups, and more ++...

Now, I’m coming back to my social work roots, remembering that people DO show up for community when there are treats around! :)

We have had 2 official Bake + Chills on my front lawn this summer. They filled my heart and were a rare chance to just hangout. We made a bunch of new friends, gave away flowers to the Recently Broken Hearted, and had a bake-themed Story Hour (Rude Cakes, lol).

Psst - If you pay close attention, you’ll notice the intimacy coaching baked right into the menu (eg The I Like You, Like You Cookie, Mindful Joy Cookies, I Gotcha Focaccia...). We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves over here. 💖

If you are in/near South Minneapolis, I personally welcome you to my front lawn for our next Bake + Chill on Saturday, July 19th from 9:30 - 11:30 am . (followed by Bakes every 2wkish :) It wouldn’t be the same without you!
