I was told I would never walk again.
When I was 18, I was in a car crash that broke my neck and left me paralyzed. As you may know, the journey of recovery is tough. With the support of friends and family, I was able to get back into life and begin college as a wheelchair user. But, I wanted to live fully, and that included travel: something I have always loved. 🌎
But the world wasn't designed for us.
Although travel was possible, I realized it was difficult. The industry hadn't been designed for wheelchair users. I'd always dreamed of visiting Torres del Paine in Patagonia, but I thought it’d be impossible for me.
Then, while studying at UC Berkeley, I saw what accessible travel could be with the right equipment and information. My lifelong friend Camilo and I had an idea: What if we trekked Patagonia? 🏔
We called the National Park—nobody could tell us if it had ever been done in a wheelchair. Travel planners had no idea how to help us plan it.
So we decided: we'll be the first.
Everyone said it was impossible.
But we did it anyway
With a special all-terrain wheelchair, a team of friends, and five days of trekking through rain and mud, we completed the W Trek. I became the first person in a wheelchair to reach the Torres del Paine viewpoint.
Our story went viral. People with disabilities started reaching out wanting to do the same trip. So, we started organizing the same trip for them. That's when Camilo and I realized: if we could help them do this, we could change accessible travel.
And Wheel the World was born.
Thank you for being a valued member of our community. I hope my story inspires you to explore the world. We're here to help make it possible.
Happy travels to you!
