For sale, as a benefit for black midwives and mothers-to-be

My amazing client, Helen painted this during her pregnancy and postpartum as a gift to her baby. She has decided to sell this painting to raise money for the Black Bay Area Birth Fund. She is asking $500, OBO, which will go directly to pay for the work of black Bay Area midwives caring for black mothers. If you would like to make an offer for The Rose Garden, please contact me via email at hgmelon@gmail.com

You can also make a direct contribution here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-black-bay-area-birth-fund, or to Sister Web, working in San Francisco to make doula support accessible. @ San Francisco, California

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Breastfeeding or chest feeding as some say, is different for everyone. It can be gavage feeding a preemie in the NICU, using a Lact Aid or an SNS to supplement breast milk at the breast, or exclusive pumping! Breastfeeding can be easy but more often it’s hard (at least in the beginning). Some even say it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever done. Here are some quotes from my amazing clients;

“Here is me and Henri nursing with our Lact-Aid!!!! 6 months strong TODAY! Due to a previous breast reduction I can’t produce all of his needs. Informing myself, getting the right help and nursing with an supplemental nursing system via the Lact-Aid has really preserved our nursing relationship. Also, due to the generosity of mothers all over the Bay Area Henri has only ever eaten human milk!”

“Couldn't have done it without your support or belief in me!”

This is a beautiful belly. This belly’s fundal height (the measurement from p***c bone to the top of the uterus) is measuring perfectly…

Every pregnant woman or birthing person has been told at one time or another in their pregnancy that they look “big” or “small” or “Is it twins?” or “you are so lucky - I was big as a house!” Though I’m sure they are well intentioned, all of these comments have the power to hurt. Everyone in our society and women in particular are constantly bombarded with judgement about size, weight, looks, shape and everything in between. Add to that common pregnancy concerns about baby’s size (“too big” or “too small”) and pregnancy weight gain (“too much” or “too little”). Many people have a history of disordered eating or body image concerns. Just because someone is slender doesn’t mean that they also haven’t felt the pressure. It is rare for me to have a client in my practice who doesn’t at some time worry about the size of their belly/baby. I’ve had the honor of palpating nearly 1000 bellies between doula clients, midwifery clients, childbirth ed students and friends) and yet, I CANNOT tell you by looking at a pregnant belly if it is “too big” or “too small”! I have to lay my hands on that belly and palpate (assess baby’s position and size) and measure that belly with a tape measure to tell for certain. People come in different shapes, with different abdominal strengths and babies in different positions and babies that are higher or lower in the pelvis. All of this, not to mention, clothes and recent meals can make a belly look bigger or smaller than it actually is! Let’s make a pact to think before we speak about size to a pregnant woman/person. What could you say instead of commenting on size to express your wonder, appreciation, joy, love etc.?

My client wrote this about her experience with her amazing doula. its World Doula Week, so give your doula a “shout out” Tell me about your doula...

”After I had my first baby with Julia by my side I said "I'm never giving birth without her again!" She was there 2.5 years later for baby number 2, born at home with Michelle. Julia is a very talented photographer as well as a doula and she took photos of my birth and new babies. The pictures of them brand new are so precious to me and I will treasure them forever. “

At this morning’s postpartum appointment a client took matters into their own hands! We had previously had a discussion about the size of the uterus relative to citrus fruit and had confusion over the size of a grapefruit. To me a grapefruit is similar to a melogold (just under a pomelo in size) to them a grapefruit is a ruby red just larger than a naval orange but much smaller than “my grapefruit”. Now we are all clear! 😂 delicious citrus for all!!! @ Redwood City, California
