Grocery shopping isn’t always “just grocery shopping.”

For youth navigating mental health challenges, trauma, and food instability, everyday tasks can feel overwhelming.

With the support of occupational therapy, these moments become opportunities to build confidence, independence, and lifelong skills.

A sensory space is a calming, thoughtfully designed room where youth can feel safe, explore their emotions, and find a sense of balance while receiving the support they need.

We asked our clinicians what they would include in their dream sensory space—swipe to see their ideas and how each item can support youth during their therapeutic journey.

Comment below: What would be in your dream sensory space?

Congrats to Han Ayasse on completing their doctoral capstone at OTTP through Samuel Merritt University!

Han’s project focused on supporting bodily autonomy in early childhood education settings and was implemented at Saint Vincent’s Day Home through a 6-week coaching intervention with kindergarten teachers.

The results were powerful—teachers built skills in managing their own stress, practicing consent with children (even during moments of noncompliance), co-regulation, and integrating movement into daily routines.

Most importantly, teachers reported increased confidence in maintaining a safe classroom while still honoring each child’s autonomy.

We’re excited to spotlight Han Ayasse, OTS, who is completing their doctoral capstone with OTTP’s East Bay team at Saint Vincent’s Day Home. Their project focuses on developing practical strategies that support bodily autonomy for both teachers and young children in early childhood education settings.

Doctoral occupational therapy students spend hundreds of hours on capstone projects—diving deep into focused areas of practice and creating solutions that directly support youth.

At OTTP-NorCal, these projects are guided by both student passion and real needs identified by our clinicians—making them practical, collaborative, and grounded in real-world care.

These capstones strengthen our work by introducing new tools, strategies, and insights that expand opportunities for the youth we serve.
