YOU MADE IT! 🥳 Our final tip for toddler parents of the series! Today we're being silly again. This time when you're passing along their water bottle, cup, or bottle, "forget" to fill it. Similar to our "forgetting" to fill the bathtub, this one almost always sparks an interesting reaction!

Looking for more? Head to our website for parent resources and to learn about working with us!

Today we're being extra silly! When it's bath time, put them and their toys in the bath and "forget" to turn on the water. Keeping it safe, we're right there with them. Start playing with the toys as if there were water in the tub! Mention water, bubbles, and any of the toy names. As with most of our tips, we aren't asking them to say anything, we're simply modeling and waiting! See what conversation or words this "forgetfulness" sparks! 😂

Here's another environmental shift that can help at home!

To do this, gather a container (clear, twist or snap top) and add their favorite food or toy, closing it tightly. Now put it in a spot they can see it and wait. This might take some time. Count to 10 after you notice they've seen it and see what happens! If nothing, try shaking it and setting it back down.

Usually, we'll see our kiddos notice it, point to it, make a sound, word, or sign and request help to open it! The most important thing a parent can do is wait to give them space to try!

Ready to raise the bar? We're adding on to our "reflect" tip with today's tip. Today, try reflecting (or mirroring) what your child says and repeat it back with an added word. For example, if they say, "truck", you could say "red truck". If they say, "mama eat" you could say "mama eats bananas".

The goal is to provide a model that is slightly more complex than what they used. We're not asking for them to repeat it, just putting it out there. Try it out and let us know how it goes!

This is a tip we find ourselves sharing with toddler parents over and over. It's just that helpful! Instead of asking yes/no questions such as "Do you want milk?", give your child two choices, "Do you want milk or water?".

This promotes new vocabulary and provides another opportunity to imitate new words or expand the number of words they use!

More examples of "Do you want" choices:
- "More food or all done?"
- "Shoes on or off?"
- "Go up or go down?"
- "Red truck or blue car?"

We're excited to hear how choices go in your home!!

Today's tip is model three things your toddler could say/sign in the moment. At breakfast this could be signing for "more", making a mmmmm, or saying "yummy!". As with most of our previous tips, we aren't requesting that the child say anything. We're instead giving models and waiting!

One of our core principles at Speech SF is following the child's lead. In other words, follow their likes. Parents often do this at home already! The trick here is to follow their likes when practicing new words. Make it fun! Following their likes helps to keep them engaged and gives them a reason to initiate or imitate new words/signs/sounds!

Here's a tip you might already use! We consistently use it in our speech sessions with toddlers.

Today we'd love for you to try to use "first", "then" language during your toddlers daily routines. Examples of "first...then..." language could be something like "first we eat, then we play" or "first bath, then book".

As with several of our other tips, we aren't necessarily requesting any words from our toddlers. We're providing models and a structure. See what response you get!

At Speech SF, we like to make things fun and take the pressure off of talking. The good news is you can do the same at home! If you've been following along over the last three weeks, we've covered a lot of our favorite toddler parent tips including modeling, waiting, and dropping things on the floor. Take a peek if you missed any!

Today we're taking the pressure off again. Throughout the day, take pictures of your toddler doing different activities. Three to five is enough! Later in the day, look at the pictures with your toddler, narrating as if you were them and providing comments. We're not asking many questions here, just seeing what they'd like to share. If screens are hard, this can also be done with photo books. Our goal here is to make it personal and fun. We can't wait to hear how it goes!
