“The holiday must be substantive as well as symbolic. It must be more than a day of celebration . . . Let this holiday be a day of reflection, a day of teaching nonviolent philosophy and strategy, a day of getting involved in nonviolent action for social and economic progress.” – Coretta Scott King
Honoring the life and legacy of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is even more important today as the truth of US history is being brutally erased and denied. As the world honors his life and service to humanity we are reminded of the power of non- violent protest and practices of peace activism to inspire our standing up and speaking out against injustice. This is the time to put our practice into action with purpose.
As we study the Bhagavad Gita this month, let us channel the spirit of all our warrior poses and invoke the bravery of the many fierce and peaceful warriors who have sacrificed their lives for truth, justice and peace. Grateful to live in SF where the parks will continue to be free to honor this day!
Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” And Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.”
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said this to an audience in Montgomery, Alabama in 1957 – and it still rings true today and every day. How do we give back to our community? Observed annually on the third Monday in January, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service. Although considered a day “off” let’s show up and do one thing to benefit others without desiring anything in return.
This is the practice of Karma Yoga, at the heart of the Bhagavad Gita and our practice of Yoga at Lotusland Yoga SF. Showing up with passion to do the work on ourselves so we can show up passionately in showing up for others.
We are offering everyone a FREE class today at 6pm to be of service to YOU! 🙏🏽🫶🏽
