Chiropractic is the practice of treating musculoskeletal disorders associated with the spine through a series of spinal adjusts aimed at providing relief from pain and pressure in the body. At Atlas Health Center, our chiropractors fully embrace this form of alternative medicine to treat conditions in the body that have also produced symptoms in the nerves, muscles, and organs associated with the spine. The primary technique that doctors of chiropractic use is the chiropractic adjustment, which is another phrase for spinal adjustment. The aim of this type of treatment focuses on reducing vertebral subluxations (misalignments) that prevent the spine from returning to its natural, free-functioning state of health. Atlas Health Center is a proud member of the San Francisco area, and we are happy to provide chiropractic treatment to the entire area. Our chiropractors are skilled at finding problem areas in the body and relieving that tension through a series of chiropractic adjustments. After a thorough evaluation in our San Francisco office, our chiropractors will provide a personalized health plan, including treatments through chiropractic adjustments and exercises for relief that is full and efficient. Situations like auto accidents, work injuries, sports injuries, and severe falls may all cause several symptoms and conditions if not treated properly. This is exactly why, if you live in the San Francisco area, you should contact Atlas Health Center to schedule an appointment because treatment that is started sooner rather than later is recovery that begins today rather than tomorrow.

Everyone experiences pain. It’s hard to get through life without straining a muscle, spraining a ligament, or wrenching your back. When resolving joint or muscle damage pain, heat and cold therapy are often recommended to find relief. Hot and cold therapies are inexpensive, effective, and generally safe remedies for many injuries and conditions. The tricky part is knowing what situation calls for hot and which calls for cold. For these treatments to be effective and avoid exacerbating a painful condition, it’s essential to understand the function of each.

🔥 Heat boosts the flow of blood and nutrients to an area of the body. It can be an effective relief for muscle tension, stiff joints, and chronic pain. Heat therapy is often most beneficial when used for a reasonable amount of time, unlike cold therapy, which needs to be limited. Minor stiffness or tension can often be relieved with only 15 to 20 minutes of heat therapy. While moderate to severe pain can benefit from longer heat therapy sessions like a warm bath, lasting between 30 minutes and two hours.

❄ Cold slows blood flow, reducing swelling and pain. It can be an effective relief for new injures and chronic pain as well. Use cold therapy for a short period, several times a day. Ten to fifteen minutes is fine, and no more than 20 minutes of cold therapy should be used at a time to prevent nerve, tissue, and skin damage.

👍 When it comes to injuries caused by physical activity, cold and heat are highly beneficial, but they’re not long-term solutions. A healthy musculoskeletal system is critical to overall health and healing, affecting how the entire body functions. Regular chiropractic adjustments along with self-care can provide long-term solutions in reducing tension and pain. So, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

It is estimated that up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain is often the result of an everyday activity done incorrectly, such as sitting at a computer in the same position for hours, bending over to vacuum, carrying shopping bags, and twisting to reach or lift an object. The good news is that most back pain usually gets better within a few days or weeks without surgery. However, protecting your back involves taking measures to avoid direct injury, prevent indirect trauma, and control the progression of a problem that may have already occurred.

Here are some tips to prevent the onset of back pain:
👌 Stay active and strengthen your abs
👌 Sleep with a pillow under your knees
👌 Don’t slump over your desk
👌 Maintain a healthy weight
👌 If you smoke, stop
👌 Be careful how you lift
👌 Maintain a proper posture
👌 Reduce stress

👍 If you’re experiencing severe back pain, give us a call. Spinal manipulation is a safe and effective non-drug spine treatment to reduce pain and help keep the joints to the spine unrestricted.

The tailbone (coccyx) is the triangular bone at the terminal end of your spine, consisting of 3 to 5 fused bone segments that provide attachment to several muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is well innervated and can become a significant source of pain if it is injured, referred to as tailbone pain (coccydynia). You may develop this pain after direct trauma or spontaneously without a specific inciting factor. The injury can make everyday tasks uncomfortable at best and unbearable at worst, typically lasting for weeks to months. Common causes of tailbone pain are falling, sitting down for extended periods, degenerative joint changes, childbirth/pregnancy, obesity, underweight, and repetitive strain injuries.

When you injured your tailbone, some of the following symptoms may occur:
👉 Achy or piercing pain in the tailbone
👉 Severe Pain when changing from sitting to standing up
👉 Severe Pain when sitting for long periods
👉 Pain during bowel movements
👉 Painful buttocks
👉 Back pain

📞 If you are suffering from tailbone pain, give us a call. We can help correct the misalignment of your tailbone that is irritating the nerves and tissues around it to help you find relief.

Are you experiencing pain or weakness when you

✅ Lift something?
✅ Open a door or shake hands?
✅ Make a fist or grip an object?
✅ Raise your hand or straighten your wrist?

😲 These are all common symptoms of tennis elbow, a type of tendinitis that occurs when tendons in your elbow are overloaded, usually by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm. Tennis elbow is one of the most common conditions seen in patients experiencing elbow pain and is thought to be due to small tears of the tendons that attach forearm muscles to the arm bone at the elbow joint. Despite its name, athletes are not the only people who develop tennis elbow, as factors such as age, occupation, or sport that involve repetitive motions of the wrist and arm can be at risk.

👍 If you or someone you know struggles with the symptoms above, give us a call, and we can help you find relief today.

The spinal cord, an extension of the central nervous system, is a long bundle of nerves and cells that run from the lower portion of the brain to the lower back. It is a delicate part of the body, which is why it’s heavily protected by 3 layers of tissue and the vertebral column. The vertebral column is heavily dependent on to be our body's primary support that allows us to stand upright, bend, and twist while also protecting the spinal cord from injury. To better understand how a spinal cord injury can affect a person’s life, you will need to know its primary functions:

➡️ Reflex responses
➡️ Walking
➡️ Carrying signals from the brain
➡️ Carrying information to the brain

⭐ The spinal cord is an essential part of your body and any sustained injury can cause issues such as loss of sensation, permanent changes in the body’s strength, and loss of motor controls or other functions. Some common causes of spinal cord trauma can be vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, and diseases.

📞 If you’re experiencing any signs of a spinal cord injury, give us a call. We offer various treatment options for patients and will work with you to determine the root cause of your discomfort.

❗ Are you experiencing body aches?
❗ Sleeping problems?
❗ Headaches, including migraines?
❗ Problems with thinking, memory, and concentration?
❗ Low pain threshold or tender points?

⭐ These are some of the symptoms experienced by people with fibromyalgia, the second most common condition which affects your bones and muscles.

Researchers believe fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations affecting how your brain and spinal cord process painful and nonpainful signals. Throughout time the pain, fatigue, and poor sleep quality can interfere with your ability to function at home or on the job leading to, at times, depression.

👍 Although there isn’t a cure or cause for this complex condition, complementary therapies such as chiropractic care can help reduce the chronic stress and pain experienced with fibromyalgia.

The rise of smartphones has gradually increased throughout the last decade, with an estimated 290 million users in America. Its ability to access the internet anywhere, anytime, has led to Americans spending more time on their phones averaging 5 hours a day. That means for 5 hours a day; you constantly have your head hung forward and down looking at your device, which usually results in a text neck. In addition, the human head weighs around 10 pounds, and for every inch you tilt your head forward, the weight doubles adding extra strain to your neck.

The neck can’t withstand so much pressure for an extended period, resulting in mild aches, pain, or stiffness in the neck or upper back. Here are some adjustments you can make to help reduce or prevent text neck pain.

👉 Raise the phone to eye level when texting or reading
👉 Take frequent breaks
👉 Stand up straight
👉 Arch and stretch
👉 Exercise regularly

🌟 If you are continuously experiencing discomfort, give us a call as an adjustment can help address the structural issues that text neck has created over time.
