After years of saving and planning for her gender-affirmation surgery, Amber was told by her doctor that she needed a safe place to recover after her surgery, or she would not be approved. A dilemma we at Maitri are all too familiar with.
Amber's Primary Care Physician referred her to our Maitri Affirmation Center. After 5 months of recovery, Amber was not just medically stable, but she had formed friendships with other trans people at our facility, something she never had before. In need of a safe place to live, following Maitri, Amber's social work case manager worked with her to secure a cute spot that was safer and more secure than her last.
Since graduating from Maitri, Amber has become an active participant in our BRANCH Aftercare Program, never missing a chance to stop by to say hello and join in a meal, calling Maitri "a source of peace when things too crazy".
