It’s all about BURNOUT here at A Cuppa Jo this week. And one of the best things you can do for burnout is take time alone.

In case you don’t know me yet, each week I do a vodcast with an expert in a field of personal growth and then post about it all week. The full video is on YouTube (link in bio) and clips and info go here.

This week I spoke to burnout coach (Marisa Olgrady-Kessner). Here are her words:

I know you’re tired, I know your days are long even though the sun in going down even faster than you remember (seriously, SO FAST) & I know you’re dying to land on “clarity”.

They keep saying clarity is key. You keep saying that. But how the heck are you supposed to get clarity??

YOU JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT YOUR NEXT MOVE IS. How the heck are you supposed to know?

Umm, hello? I didn’t know I signed up for this part of adulting.

OKAY- reality check. There is something that helps. Are you ready?

Spend time alone- doing nothing, walking the dog, listening to a mindless podcast, writing in your journal, wondering… literally anything that you add intention to.

“Solitude is where you find yourself so that you can reach out to other people and form real attachments. When we don't have the capacity for solitude, we turn to other people in order to feel less anxious or in order to feel alive” -Sherry Turkle

I have no more to add to that. Sherry Turtle kinda said it the right way.

Go spend time alone. JUST DO IT.
⁣Clarity will come. I know because it happens EVERY DAMN TIME. Clarity just happens.

WHY? Because spending time alone (intentionally) is MAGIC.

There are many reasons why women are facing burn out these days.

One is that we don’t have regular ways of closing out the stress cycle brought on by our jobs and day-to-day lives.

Fortunately this can be done through simple methods that I list here.

Another is the pressure that society puts on women that is a constant burden. I will address this later this week.

Burnout is not caused just by working too hard, it’s caused by a loss of meaning in our lives; the ‘what’s it all for?’ question. This is why so many health workers are getting burnt out - their once fulfilling job has become much less so. Do you have meaning in your life? Are you looking for meaning?

Add to that the constant effort we as women feel we need to make to mould ourselves into the person we think we should be: thinner, prettier, more efficient, a better mom, etc etc. It’s exhausting. This loss of a sense of authenticity burns us out.

One remedy for burn out is to make time to pause. Get off the treadmill. Exit autopilot.

Burnout coach Marisa from told me in our interview this week (link in bio) that one of the best ways to repair burnout is to spend time by yourself doing not a whole hell of a lot.

She runs wilderness retreats in Utah, but if you can’t manage to do one of those, just get outdoors, take a notebook and jot down your thoughts. Or just be present in nature.

The more we are quiet the more we can hear our thoughts about what we need to restore us.
