Creativity Explored

Creativity Explored Creativity Explored is a studio-based collective in San Francisco that partners with developmentally Art changes lives!

Creativity Explored was founded on a belief that art is essential to life. We exist to provide developmentally disabled people access to the human right of creative expression. Creativity Explored was founded in San Francisco in 1983 by Florence and Elias Katz, an artist and a psychologist. Sparked by the nationwide deinstitutionalization of disabled people, the duo launched a movement that expanded defined notions of artistry when they founded three Bay Area organizations – Creativity Explored, Creative Growth, and NIAD (Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development). Our organizations honor the Katzs’ legacy in the Bay Area by continuing to collaborate, co-curate exhibitions, and share resources. Together our programs serve as a model for the field of art and disability worldwide. Creativity Explored now serves 130 artists and has facilitated the careers of hundreds of disabled artists. Creativity Explored artists have seen their work exhibited in museums, galleries, and art fairs in over 14 countries and have earned over $2 million from their art. Our life-changing programs continue to open doors of inclusion to center the personhood and creative vision of people with developmental disabilities. Most importantly, Creativity Explored is a source of community, empowerment and dignity. At Creativity Explored, we believe in a future society with an enlightened understanding of its relationship with neurodiverse people—one that has evolved from one-way support to mutually-enriching growth. We see a society strengthened by an authentic appreciation of all people’s creative contributions. In times of great transition, we continue to center the personhood and agency of our artists in all our efforts, asking, “What is important to you?” We will continue to innovate to provide safe and virtual services that enrich the lives of our artists, their families and supporters, on their terms. Our dedicated staff, board, and volunteers are also expanding our commitment to racial justice and disability advocacy by amplifying the voices of studio artists of color and artists who are immigrants. We are proud to create space for our artists and staff to learn about and honor diversity by examining and celebrating the intersections of disability, race, ethnicity, class, gender, and other facets of our identities.

Back with another highlight of one of the progressive studios participating in the Creativity Explored x Open Invitational art fair, open NOW as part of ! This time, check out our other sister organization, NIAD Art Center in Richmond, CA ()!

NIAD is one of the three original progressive art studios founded in the Bay Area by Florence and Elias Katz; this model has now been replicated across the country and around the world. They opened NIAD Art Center (originally “National Institute of Art and Disabilities”) in 1982 in Richmond, CA with the belief that creativity is inherent in every person, and the ability to express that creativity is powerful and transformational.

NIAD, which now stands for Nurturing Independence Through Artistic Development, has since expanded into both in-person and virtual studio programs supporting nearly 80 artists who exhibit their work at galleries, museums, non-profits, and fairs worldwide. Working alongside artist facilitators and support staff, NIAD artists sustain vital art practices and take an active role in the development of their careers as professional artists—careers that can span decades.

For CExOI, NIAD is showing work by artists Saul Alegria, Julio Del Rio, Dorian Reid, and Jonathan Velazquez — check out some of their work!

We're not done highlighting our amazing studio partners at the Creativity Explored x Open Invitational art fair, open NOW as part of ! Today, check out our sister organization across the Bay, Creative Growth in Oakland, CA ()!

Creative Growth is a non-profit organization based in Oakland, California, that advances the inclusion of artists with developmental disabilities in contemporary art and strengthens community by providing a supportive studio environment and gallery representation.

Founded in 1974, Creative Growth has been a pioneering force in the arts and disabilities sector, establishing a model for creative communities where art is an essential form of communication accessible to all. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, Creative Growth has partnered with SFMOMA to present a landmark exhibition showcasing half a century of artistic achievement and innovation.

From the first day Creative Growth started in the East Bay home of Elias Katz and Florence Ludins-Katz, the vision was clear. Art would be the path forward for people with disabilities to express themselves, and a professional gallery would exhibit their work.

The Creative Growth Studio is home to over 140 artists who work in a variety of media. Facilitated by professional artists, the studio provides artistic support, high-quality materials, and space for painting, drawing, ceramics, woodwork, fiber arts, printmaking, and digital media. The studio is an open space, converted 12,000 square foot former auto repair shop.

For CExOI, Creative Growth is showing work by artist Rickie Algarva — check out some of her work!

Rickie Algarva has an extraordinary ability to synthesize reality and fantasy, to which she credits the “computer in [her] mind.” Activated by color and enclosed in bold black outlines, her shapes slide and vibrate around the page. Like all true Surrealists, Algarva has a host of motifs to call upon: hamburgers, flowers with wings, clocks, toy boxes, and fish swimming out of faucets. Her figures, often seen from behind in Algarva’s “360-degree” perspective, give no indication that their surroundings are anything other than ordinary; they ride their bicycles with hamburger wheels and dance on clock-faces with serene expressions. “These kids just throw hamburgers in the ground and they grow,” she explains matter-of-factly on the origin of her extraordinary hamburger trees. “If they wanted to grow a sesame seed bun, all they’d have to do is put sesame seeds in the ground.”

Meet another of the progressive studios we're gathering for the inaugural Creativity Explored x Open Invitational art fair, January 23–25 as part of ! Today, let's check out Center for Creative Works in Philadelphia, PA ()!

The Center for Creative Works (CCW) is a progressive art studio that is part of an international movement, redefining the role of artists with intellectual disabilities within the contemporary art world. CCW focuses on the professional development and representation of artists with intellectual disabilities, offering a space where individuals can explore their potential, gain visibility, build their artistic practice and share their unique human experiences. With studios in Philadelphia and Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, CCW supports artists to gain social capital through professional, artistic practice and recognizes the value in sharing the unique human experience through creative contribution. CCW fosters artistic growth by providing artists with access to a professional studio and relevant support, allowing them to build portfolios, exhibit work nationally, and engage with the broader art community.

The Center for Creative Works is a progressive art studio focused on professional development and representation of neurodivergent artists. At the heart of CCW's mission is the belief that artistic practice should be valued equally, regardless of an artist’s background or neurodivergence The center’s exhibition program plays a critical role in advancing this goal by showcasing the work of these artists in professional settings, such as galleries and art fairs. These exhibitions not only provide a platform for the artists but also serve to shift public perceptions, challenging preconceived notions about the capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities. CCW ensures that artists receive a fair commission on sales, aligning their representation with standard professional practices in the art world.

For CExOI, CCW will be highlighting the work of their artist Eric Stewart. In his paintings and drawings, Eric Stewart (b. 1991) develops detailed renderings of an eclectic collection of source imagery that blur the line between fantasy and reality. Recent paintings feature scenes from Stewart’s life inspired by found images and his own photography, focusing on his North Philadelphia neighborhood and family portraits. Themes in his work range from art history to archival photographs of agricultural technology from the 1900s. His portrait work emphasizes subtle expressions of posture and mood. Here is some of his work!

The collective is a program of Community Access, a non-profit founded in 1974, which has grown to become one of NYC's leading housing, mental health, and advocacy organizations for individuals living with mental health concerns and families who have experienced homelessness.

Community Access' mission is to expand opportunities for people living with mental health concerns to recover from trauma and discrimination through affordable housing, training, and healing-focused services. We are built on the simple truth that people are experts in their own lives.

For CExOI, ECF Art Centers will be highlighting the work of their artist Carl Sukenick! Carl is a New York–based visual artist and independent filmmaker known for his work in low-budget horror and underground experimental film. He has directed and starred in several cult genre films including “Space Psychos” and “Alien Beasts.” His work is often recut, reinterpreted, and retitled by other filmmakers and producers.

His drawings, paintings, and mixed-media works frequently depict monsters, aliens, mutant characters and creatures including an ongoing body of work loosely referred to as the heads, in which emotion is conveyed through minimal, gestural marks. Sukenick’s works reflect a lifetime as a maker and devoted fan of film, visual art, and music.

Time for us to introduce another of the progressive studios we're gathering for the inaugural Creativity Explored x Open Invitational art fair, January 23–25 in San Francisco as part of ! Today, let's check out Elbow Room, in Portland, OR (.room.pdx)!

Elbow Room was formed in 2020 after the closure of various day programs due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The goal was to maintain and support a community of Portland artists who have been working and creating side by side for the better part of a decade. Many, if not all, have moved through various iterations of progressive art programs around the Portland metro area most of their lives and have relied on the many systems in order to have access to creative and social space.

Elbow Room began as a virtually based group that was open and accessible to folks experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities. For seven days a week, participants could hang out with community members, socialize and make art. Art supplies were gathered and distributed throughout the community and when vaccines became available, small groups met in public to make art in person. As time went on, various community spaces offered to house art making groups for the day.

After becoming a nonprofit 501(c)3, Elbow Room was able to secure a studio/gallery space in SE Portland in August 2022. Artists supported by various provider organizations now use the space and materials to explore creativity and participate in the latest iteration of a sustained art community.

Elbow Room will be exhibiting artworks by their artists Shannon Anderson, Ricky Bearghost, and Elmeater Morton — we can't wait to see what they bring down to SF!
