When food becomes a doorway to memory...

In partnership with Jake Broder and the UCSF Global Brain Health Institute, our recent dinner event explored how food, storytelling, and science intersect to reveal that it not only nourishes us but also connects us.

This year’s theme, Ladies Night, highlighted the often-overlooked reality that dementia affects women differently, from later diagnosis to faster progression, underscoring the need for research and visibility.

Through the voices and courage of our Resident Chefs, this project reminded us that memory loss is not only a clinical condition but also a journey that affects a person’s identity, their dignity, and their relationships. Watch the video: https://youtu.be/dR0kxJhT_Fc

As we honor Holocaust Remembrance Day, we also reflect on courage, conscience, and service during another challenging time in history.

Our campus recently welcomed Rabbi Lewis for “Letters Home: A Jewish Chaplain’s Vietnam Experience.” In 1970, newly ordained, he volunteered as a chaplain during the Vietnam War, guiding and comforting Jewish soldiers grappling with the weight of the draft and deep moral questions about their mission. Through his photographs, he introduced residents to the people whose lives he touched—connections that endure to this day.

Both the Holocaust and the Vietnam War remind us of the profound resilience of the human spirit and the importance of moral courage.

We are grateful to Rabbi Lewis for sharing his story and helping our community reflect on history, memory, and the enduring power of empathy. #

We are approaching a demographic shift that will reshape the demand for care. By 2030, the number of Americans over 65 will grow from 60 million to 70 million, reaching nearly 80 million by 2040.

We were thrilled to welcome the Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman Quartet to our campus for a special performance exploring jazz standards that originated in film—music that helped carry jazz into the collective imagination.

Their program highlighted the extraordinary contributions of Jewish composers whose impact on 20th-century film and popular music cannot be overstated. Audiences were treated to a wide-ranging musical journey, from silent films and early “talkies” to animated works, detective/noir, gothic and supernatural themes, sweeping romances, musicals, and films born both in and beyond Hollywood.

It was a wonderful afternoon of cinematic storytelling through jazz, and a joy to experience this music together on campus.

Our Bright Minds two part Dementia Workshop was a full house with great energy that sparked thoughtful questions and ‘aha’ moments.

Amy LaGrant shared her personal journey alongside the latest research, offering practical support strategies for caretakers and Rob Sarison led a dynamic, interactive workshop using improv, drama therapy and psychology to ease communication.

It was a fantastic experience full of shared learning and human connection.

We loved attending the Celebrity Memorabilia Exhibit, featuring the personal collection of Dr. G, one of our geriatric psychiatrists. Seeing iconic pieces both up close and on screen was a real treat, and the pop culture movie trivia kept everyone laughing and fully entertained.

Thank you for giving us a touch of Hollywood glam, a wave of nostalgia, and the generous sharing of a beloved personal collection.

We gathered together to celebrate Hanukkah by lighting candles, sharing stories, and enjoying being in community.

Moments like these remind us that Hanukkah is about light and the warmth we create when we come together. Chag Sameach to all who celebrated with us.

In a time when the world can feel heavy, moments of light matter more than ever.

Our residents and staff came together for a friendly latke cook-off filled with laughter and the irresistible smell of sizzling potatoes. Residents, team members, and friends shared stories and recipes (with onion and without) and showed pride in their creations.

Hanukkah reminds us that even in dark times, light endures. As we light the first candle, our hearts are with Jewish communities everywhere.
