Acknowledging the challenges H.R. 1 is placing on healthcare, California State Assembly Health Committee Chair Mia Bonta is hosting a series of roundtables throughout the state that seek to learn from health systems and key stakeholders about direct impacts. On November 17, 2025, Chair Bonta hosted a meeting at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with Assemblymembers Patrick Ahrens, Ash Kalra, and Alex Lee. In attendance to share their experience and response to H.R. 1 included County Supervisors Otto Lee and Betty Duong, County Executive James R. Williams, local hospital representatives, as well as labor and healthcare partners.

The conversation centered on how federal cuts under H.R. 1 will impact access to care, critical services, and place financial pressure on safety-net systems across the state. It also focused on coordinating efforts at the state and local levels to protect essential services amid budget constraints, workforce shortages, and increasing community needs. After the discussion, Assemblymember Bonta toured Valley Medical Center to see first-hand the award-winning care and dedicated healthcare professionals who care for our community.
