It’s been getting so nice out lately, and we’ve just been outside more.

And every time, I’m reminded how much is happening for kids out there without us needing to do much.

They’re moving their bodies in ways that build strength and coordination. They seem more settled. They get curious, wander, figure things out on their own.

But what I notice the most is just the connection.
Things feel slower. Easier.

No setup. No pressure. Just being outside together.

That’s enough šŸ¤

Follow our colleagues to see how amazing the outdoors is for kids!

Did you know we have a shop on our website where you can find some of our favorite resources? šŸ¤

Over the years, we’ve noticed there are certain topics we come back to again and again in sessions with families. Things like…
ā€œWhat should I be looking for?ā€
ā€œIs this typical?ā€
ā€œHow can I support my child at home?ā€

So we started turning those conversations into simple, easy-to-understand handouts you can actually use in everyday life.

✨ Infant Sensory Bundle (birth–36m)
✨ Sensory Red Flags
✨ Body Budget

These aren’t overwhelming or full of fluff. They’re the same concepts we use in therapy, broken down in a way that feels clear, practical, and supportive.

Whether you’re just starting to learn about your child’s sensory needs or you’ve been on this journey for a while, we hope these feel like a helpful guide you can come back to anytime.

Structure isn’t about control. It’s about supporting a developing brain.

Young children don’t yet have a fully developed prefrontal cortex. That’s the part of the brain responsible for planning, predicting, organizing, and shifting attention. When we expect kids to hold the plan in their head, remember what comes next, and regulate their emotions at the same time, we’re asking a lot.

A written or visual schedule does some of that work for them.

It externalizes the plan so their brain doesn’t have to. It reduces uncertainty, which lowers stress. It frees up mental energy for regulation, learning, and connection instead of constant ā€œwhat’s next?ā€ guessing.

This is why structure often leads to calmer bodies, smoother transitions, and fewer power struggles. Not because kids need rigidity, but because their brains need support.

Support first. Skills follow.

Process over product. 🌿

In pediatric OT, we care far more about how a child is doing something than what the final result looks like.

Are they trying?ļæ½
Are they problem solving?ļæ½
Are they staying regulated when it feels hard?ļæ½
Are they building strength, coordination, and confidence along the way?

A perfect craft doesn’t tell us much.

But watching a child plan, adjust, wobble, laugh, and try again tells us everything.

The goal isn’t a Pinterest-worthy outcome.

The goal is resilience.ļæ½
Motor confidence.ļæ½
Flexible thinking.ļæ½
Trust in their own body.

That’s where the real growth happens. šŸ¤

Let’s get messy. 🌈

Messy play isn’t just fun. It’s powerful.

Messy builds
āœ”ļø Sensory processing
āœ”ļø Tactile tolerance
āœ”ļø Fine motor skills
āœ”ļø Creativity
āœ”ļø Flexibility

When kids squish, pour, smear, and explore, their nervous systems are learning. 🧠

And yes… sometimes development looks like flour on the floor and paint on sleeves. šŸ¤

That’s okay.

And if you’re thinking, ā€œI cannot handle that in my kitchen right now,ā€ that’s okay too.

That’s part of why we offer free community events and sensory play times. We make space for the mess so you don’t have to.

You can show up.
They can explore.
We’ll handle the cleanup.

Sometimes supporting development is as simple as letting them get messy somewhere that feels manageable for you. 🌿

This is what co-regulation looks like. šŸ¤

Not forced compliance.
Not performance.
Not ā€œsit still and try harder.ā€

It’s shared joy.
It’s safety you can hear in the laughter.
It’s a nervous system saying, ā€œI feel okay here.ā€ 🧠✨

When a child feels connected, their body softens.
Their play expands.
Their learning opens up.

Co-regulation isn’t a strategy we tack on at the end.

It’s the foundation.

Grateful for therapists who understand that trust comes before skill building and that laughter is often the clearest sign of safety. šŸ¤šŸŒæ

This is the work.

Comprehensive sensory based occupational therapy clinic in San Jose, CA.

As a parent you have watched your child struggle both at home and at school but haven’t quite been able to put your finger on what is causing the challenge. You notice your child is starting to lose self-confidence and is unwilling to try hard things. It seems like your child has big reactions and becomes upset easily and you don’t know how to help her.

Many children with sensory processing challenges aren’t receiving adequate supports in school or through traditional medical models.

It doesn’t have to be that way. AVCTC is ready to help your child and family feel ā€œJoie de Vivreā€ (joy in life).
