For the 28th consecutive time, we've earned an "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group!
💖 For Our Community, With Deep Gratitude. 💖
At French Hospital Medical Center, we're humbled and proud to announce something remarkable: For the 28th consecutive time, we've earned an "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
This isn't just an "A" it signifies:
Being a "Straight A" hospital – a consistent safety benchmark achieved by less than 13% of hospitals nationwide.
An extraordinary distinction: French Hospital is one of only 11 hospitals in the entire nation (and just 2 in California!) to receive an "A" in every single one of Leapfrog's grading cycles since 2012!
As CEO Sue Andersen puts it, this reflects a "deeply ingrained culture where patient well-being is the very foundation of everything we do."
Thank you for trusting us with your care. Your safety is our mission!

French Hospital’s Pet Therapy Program brings comfort to patients, staff, and visitors via wagging tails and puppy smiles. Therapy dogs—like “Happy” shown here—brighten everyone’s day and help our patients in their healing journey. We are grateful to the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust for its ongoing support of this special program. 🐾

French Hospital Medical Center has a long and rich history. We have served San Luis Obispo County for nearly 70 years and is a leader in providing top quality care, regardless of ability to pay. As a member of Dignity Health, our mission is to provide quality services delivered in a compassionate and cost-effective manner, to serve and advocate for the poor and disenfranchised, and to partner with others in the community to improve quality of life.
In 1946, Dr. Edison French, a local physician, purchased the San Luis Sanitarium on Marsh Street in San Luis Obispo, renaming it "French Hospital." There he began to practice state-of-the art medicine. In 1972, French Hospital moved to our current, larger location on Johnson Avenue. Since joining Dignity Health in 2004, French Hospital has made a rapid resurgence as a nationally recognized hospital, being named one of the Nation’s 100 Top Hospitals three times in recent years by Truven Health Analytics.
Today, French Hospital is San Luis Obispo's only not-for-profit hospital, focused on providing high quality, compassionate health care, right here on the Central Coast.
French Hospital Medical Center Foundation supports the work of the hospital by partnering with the community to provide for new facilities and equipment, new programs and services, health education and community outreach, and charity care. As a not-for-profit hospital, French Hospital relies on private support and contributions to meet the changing health care needs of our community.
